Why A Down Sleeping Bag?

A down sleeping bag has its problems. They are usually more delicate than bags with synthetic fill, for example. They also lose almost all of their insulating ability when they are wet. Of course, you could just treat them gently. My own down bag is over ten years old now, and has no tears and no substantial loss of down. I have slept in some pretty rough conditions with it too. Pay attention to anything sharp or abrasive and even the most delicate bag can last for a decade or more.

I have also managed to keep my down sleeping bag dry during some nasty conditions. I once backpacked for seven days in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado when it was raining at some point during every day and every night. My bag never got wet, and I was sleeping under a tarp the whole time. So you can keep a bag dry if you try. That takes care of the negatives. Now for a look at the positives.

Down Sleeping Bags Are Still The Lightest

I don't really buy equipment that often now, so I had to look at what was out there to see if the above claim was still true. It is. The synthetics are getting closer and closer in terms of warmth for the weight of the fill, but they can't yet match down. It may not be a big difference, but for those like myself who like to backpack in the mountains with less than ten pounds in the pack, every ounce counts.

My own bag, by the way, weighs just 17 ounces. It is rated down to 40 degrees Fahrenheit, but I have used it comfortably below freezing many times. It is from Western Mountaineering.

Down Sleeping Bags - Other Advantages

Perhaps a bigger advantage than the weight savings (those synthetics are close, after all), is space savings. None of the synthetic-fill sleeping bags can pack down anywhere near as small as a down bag. Mine is the size of a loaf of bread when packed. This makes a difference when you have a small pack or a big trip. In fact, I take advantage of the space savings and do over-nighters with a day pack - something I couldn't do with a less compressible bag.

Finally, down sleeping bags last longer. The best synthetic fills seem to start losing loft after just a year or two, and they can't be reconditioned much. A down bag, on the other hand, can be fluffed up in the dryer and may have most of its loft even after ten years if stored properly (unstuffed).

There are certainly times and places for the synthetics. You might not want to backpack in the Olympic National Park's rain forest with down, for example. But if you have to choose just one bag for all-round use, and you like to go light, you should seriously consider a down sleeping bag.

How to Choose the Best Caribbean Cruise

There are various cruise lines that offer Caribbean cruises. To know what the best Caribbean cruise is to take can be hard to find out.  Each cruise line will have unique things to offer to make your cruise special and memorable. It depends upon what your interests are as to what Caribbean cruise will be best for you. May I tell you about one of my very favorite cruises? The Heart of the Caribbean from Royal Caribbean is one of my very favorite cruises of all time.I had so much fun for eight days and seven nights. There was so much to do and enjoy! In my opinion it is the best Caribbean cruise.

This cruise starts in San Juan, Puerto Rico and visits the islands of the Caribbean for eight days.Everyday is filled with exciting adventures and activities on and off the ship.

First you dock in Oranjestad, Aruba which is located on the southern coast. The very important city of Aruba, Oranjestad, is the Dutch capital and it means "Orangetown.". The colorful Dutch colonial architecture is delightful to see. Here you can explore the island and see many wonderful sights such as the California Lighthouse by caravan. Oranjestad also has beautiful beaches and snorkeling is a great adventure.

The next stop that the ship docks at is off the Venezuelan coast at Willemstad, Curacao. Of the three "ABC" Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao), Curacao is the largest and most populated. In 1954 it separated from the Netherlands yet you will find that there is still a very strong Dutch influence in its architecture and its culture. You can explore the magnificent Hato Caves and underground lake here in Willemstad. What an awesome sight it was to see this underground world. There is also a trolley-train tour that is enjoyable.

The next stop will be on the northeastern coast of the Caribbean at Philipsburg, Saint Maarten. There are two sides to this island, the Dutch and French. On the Dutch side you can find beautiful jewelry, excellent beaches, and night festivities. The French side of the Caribbean is known for its nude beaches and clothing stores to shop in. Because of the many duty-free shops the island is known as a shopper's paradise. Jewelry, leather goods, tobacco, designer clothes are some of the things you find here.

Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands is the last stop for this fabualous cruise. Purchased by the United States, Saint Thomas has so much to offer. Here the shopping is excellent, the dining is magnificent, and the white sandy beaches are breathtaking. While you are in Saint Thomas you do not want to miss the spectacular view of Magens Bay from the very famous Drakes Seat.

I’m sure you can see why I think this is the best Caribbean cruise to take. You can enjoy the various onboard activities as well as the many breathtaking stops made which makes this trip truly memorable. Welcome to your dream vacation!

Using a Caribbean Cruise Review in Finding That Perfect Cruise

There is in truth nothing more enjoyable than going away on a cruise with that special someone, or even taking in a family cruise, but before you do this you're going to wish to make certain that you're selecting just the proper cruise for your tastes and to suit the purpose.

Depending on who you are planning to bring on the cruise with, you will want to assure that there are suitable activities and passengers onboard in order that you are able to enjoy yourself as much as possible. Cruises that cater to grownups differ greatly from family cruises for example, so be sure that you know who you're taking with you prior to selecting a cruise.

How to Best Use a Caribbean Cruise Review

Another measure that you're going to want to take is studying a Caribbean cruise review such as a Royal Caribbean cruise review, which will give you preceding riders’ reviews on the cruise line and what they had to say about it.

You should be able to find a Caribbean cruise review for any cruise offered, by any cruise line. This will really help you for several reasons.

One of the most important reasons for researching and studying Caribbean Cruise reviews, is to learn what packages the different cruise lines offer, and what possibilities there are for you. That way you will be able to choose the best cruise for you.

After all, if these reviews are not written by the cruise line themselves, you will be able to trust that they are not written with bias. They are presented by other passengers who have already experienced their cruises, and who are freely giving their honest opinion, and offering their thoughts about the cruise, and if it might be good for you.

If you're interested in finding a Caribbean cruise review the Net will be a great resource to you. It will provide you all the info and reviews that you need, and these will play a key function in the process of you selecting a cruise line and package to perfectly accommodate your needs.

Planning It Out

When you've read reviews and know which cruise line and package you wish to go with, you will be able to get down to the fun part of actually preparing for your cruise. Remember to take your time and the most effective plan is to make a list of all the things you need to take on your trip, and then check them off as you go along.

How to Find the Best Caribbean Cruise Ship for your Family

Finding a Caribbean Cruise Ship for your Family

Keywords: Caribbean Cruise Ship

Years ago cruises were primarily for couples and a few singles. Today you will find that there are more families cruising together than ever before. To accomodate families the cruise industry has changed quite a bit by providing programs and activites for all ages to enjoy aboard the ship and off the ship. Though there are some cruise lines that haven't quite come aboard in accomodating the family yet. Planning a Caribbean cruise for your family means finding the Caribbean cruise ship that will most closely meet the needs of each member of your family. Here are some tips in helping find a Caribbean cruise ship for your family vacation.

The first thing to do is look for a Caribbean cruise ship that is designed with families in mind. The cruise line should have a children's program available with various activities that accomodate children of all ages. This is especially important as your children will be aboard a ship with nowhere to go and will become easily bored.  Check into the number of activities the Caribbean cruise ship offers for children and families as this will give you an idea of how much the family is a priority to that particular cruise ship. Others things to check out is how they handle infants and toddlers on the ship and if there is babysitting provided.

Looking into the dining accomodations is our next tip. Taking their small children into a formal dining room every night which serves fancy gourmet meals is not always preferrable to many parents. Alternate dining arrangements with food that yound children will actually eat is a great sign that the cruise ship is geared for families. There are plenty of menu choices for every one to enjoy a great meal in the buffet restaurant. Some Caribbean cruise ships have programs that allow children to eat with their youth directors so mom and dad can enjoy the gourmet food in the formal dining hall a night or two.

It would be wise to do some research in order to find a family friendly Caribbean cruise ship so that the whole family will be able to enjoy their cruising vacation.

Wales Holiday Cottages and More...

Visit Wales Ad Campaign

So, we are officially in recession (like we hadn’t already noticed!and I haven't heard one definitive answer on when the economy will grow again.

It’s that time of year where I start to think about where I want to go on holiday, but I want to be a little bit more careful with my pennies this year. My money can't be spent to the same level abroad now and cheap flights aren't as available as they were before this credit mess. What if I book a flight and the company folds before my holiday or leaves me stranded on a tropical island (well, that wouldm't be so bad!)!).

I was chatting to a friend last night about my conundrum – explaining that I wanted a holiday full of FUN and laughter as I am fed up of hearing all about the credit crunch but at the same time I was living it so have to spend carefully. A holiday in Wales is what he suggested. Wales!! Really!? I thought the weather was crap there! And it’s full of sheep, leaks and daffodils and, and, and Wales holiday cottages and blokes named Dafydd!

Apparently, ‘it’s not unusual’, for people to stereotype Wales and the Welsh in this way - the weather is a little dodgy and there are blokes named Dafydd (but not all of them) but there is so much to do that the weather doesn’t spoil a thing. He kindly informed me that preparing for bad weather means that good weather is an added treat.

So, I decided to take a look for myself. I jumped onto my laptop, fired up the internet access and plunged into a world of Wales on the web. I love youtube.com. It's perfect for the lazy surfer.com – saves me reading stuff and I found the following video which is part of an advertising campaign for visitwales.co.uk suggesting things you can do in Wales.

Apparently you can go cycling, play at boats with kids, stay in a blue hotel (which looks like a toy – holiday cottages Wales stylie!) which is full of local stuff like the blankets, the art on the wall – even the beds. Rock climbing, and then throwing yourself off a cliff into water, drink welsh wine, eat crab and sausages (Welsh surf and turf – tee hee!), or Michelin star cuisine made with local produce. My god, the list is exhaustive.

So, yep – I’m sold – I’m going to give it a go, safely in the knowledge that I am helping our slowing economy by keeping British money in Britain.

“Relaxing and Sports in the Caribbean”

Most people go on holidays with relaxation in mind. Therefore, people are now moving away from holiday inns and hotels and looking at other forms of accommodation. They are especially looking for accommodation near the seaside if going to the Caribbean. The Caribbean is beautiful for relaxation as well as having fun whilst being active at the same time.

There are various types of accommodation available in the Caribbean, more specifically Barbados. Everybody who books a holiday in Barbados is now looking at booking holiday villas instead of holiday inns, hotels and the like. Holiday villas are the new holiday homes for tourists. They want to rent holiday villas in Barbados near the beach, and in walking distance from local amenities such as restaurants and bars as well as the local sporting centers.

However, when most people hear about Barbados, they immediately think food! Over the years, Barbados has developed and is now not only famous for its lavish restaurants and cuisines but for the varied water sports activity potential. Over a small period, it has quickly become one of the best places to be for surfing and was up behind Hawaii as a potential water sports resort.

Both the South and West of Barbados boast the Caribbean Sea with turquoise blue water, also known as the aquatic playground of Barbados. Therefore, if you don’t play the sports or don’t have the energy then relaxing on the beach and watching others can be just as fun. Barbados also boast a varied number of water sport centers that have special hire equipment to use underwater including scooters and underwater cameras. With a wide range of water sports to choose from, Barbados has eventually become one of the hottest and happening places to visit.

There are also a number of water cruises that can be booked, whether it’s the Catamaran Cruise or the Submarine Tours. Water cruises are a fun way of taking in the breathtaking sights of Barbados from a distance, in a relaxed manner. So remember, that next time you are in Barbados, make sure you do go on the boat cruises or experience some of the water sports activities, as they are definitely a fun way of experiencing the true Barbados culture.

Other activities that tourists can participate in include scuba diving, sailing, parasailing and many more. So next time you come to Barbados, don’t just sit in your holiday villas, take some time to experience Barbados, you’ll soon realize what you’re missing out on!

Where To Find A Wilderness Survival Guide

After 6 months of getting lost in the woods, one camper was rescued by rescue workers and policemen and firemen after they found him half dead from starvation and dehydration. He went camping with his classmates half a year ago and he got lost from the gang. Fortunately, he survived. Have it not been for the wilderness survival skills he learned before they went out camping, he could have been found dead floating in a river or in the mouth of a hungry bear, in pieces.

It is just correct for anyone to teach himself how to survive in the wilderness. You can get lost among these mesmerizing sight of tall trees, the clear blue sky and the clear white water crystal. There are already many incidents of people getting lost in the woods, in the mountains and some of them were never found. It’s always highly recommended by proper authorities that if ever you want to go hiking or camping in them woods, you need to train yourself first some survival skills training or if not, you can hire somebody to be your guide who knows the place like it was the back of his hand.

But availing the services of someone who is an expert to be the guide can also be too costly, that is, if ever you can find somebody. Sometimes, other individuals can be too pre-occupied doing their own personal obligations and works that are eating their time and you can’t do something about. That’s why, if ever you want something done, you have to do it by yourself. Now, the query is, if ever you want to go out and have some good time in the wild, where can you find something that can teach you some wilderness survival talents? Is there a wilderness survival guide that you can find especially here on the Internet? You see, that guy who stayed alive his 6-months suffering in the wilderness found a guide on the Net and that’s what made him live a little longer to tell his tale wherever he goes.

Undiscovered Travel Destinations

Not all travel destinations are packed full of tourists. In fact, not all of them are even on the map. I have had an interest in these "secret" places since I first discovered two little lakes high in the hills and cliffs north of Ishpeming, Michigan. No trails even lead to these, and there was a trout on the line ten seconds after the cast.

Other travel destinations are not so isolated, but they are still generally overlooked by most tourists. This was true of Yelapa, Mexico when I went there in 1981. The beaches were uncrowded, you could buy fresh fish for dinner from the fishermen in the afternoon, and a palapa (thatched-roof house) rented for about $100 per month. The surrounding jungle had waterfalls you could swim under. No roads lead there, but there was a daily boat from nearby Puerto Vallarta.

Yelapa, alas, has been discovered and overrun with tourists now. Often being one myself, I have nothing against tourists. But when the crowd gets too thick I prefer the more secret places. Here are some examples of a few of these travel destinations that are still undiscovered.

Storm Lake

Anaconda, Montana is a fun destination by itself. You can rent a room above the Harp and Thistle Pub for $140 for the week (as of August 2007) and be within walking distance of at least ten casinos with nickel slot machines, as well as a new brew pub and restaurant (Rocky Mountain Brewing). Two blocks away, the Washoe Theater, considered one of the most beautiful in the country by the Smithsonian Institute, charges just $4 for a movie, and 90 cents for a small popcorn. A Jack Nicholas-designed golf course (The Old Works Golf Course) is just at the edge of this small town.

If you really want to escape, though, drive 14 miles west on Highway 1. When you see the sign that says "Storm Lake," turn there. It's nine miles to the lake (stay left when the road splits), but you may need high clearance for the last mile (although we used to make it there in our Ford Escort). There will usually be a few locals at the lake, but you'll always find a place to park.

The lake sits at about 8,000 feet, and is known locally for its cutthroat trout. Hike the trail along the right side and on the other side you'll find the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness Area. Less than hour up the trail you'll reach Storm Lake Pass, at the tree line. From here you can continue into the tundra environment of Goat Meadows, or into a seemingly endless wilderness of mountains and lakes. You'll rarely have any company other than the bears and birds and mountain goats.

Alamogordo, New Mexico

This is not at the top of most tourists lists, which is good for those of us that like our travel destinations to be uncrowded. It is a great little town, however, and a great base from which to explore the surrounding area. It is also a nice place to escape the winter, since it rarely snows or gets too cold here.

You can check out the little zoo right in town for a relaxing afternoon. There is also an Imax Theater on the north side of town (watch for the signs), and you probably won't have any long lines to wait in. On Saturdays from June to October you can visit the Farmers market at the county fairgrounds.

If you want to get up above the desert, drive the thirty minutes or so up to Cloudcroft in the nearby mountains, or go a little further the observatory at Sunspot, or to the Casino in Ruidoso. If you time it right, you can bask in the sun one day in Alamogordo and be skiing the next day at the Cloudcroft Ski Area.

For an unusual destination, you can visit the Trinity Test Site, where the first nuclear bomb was exploded. It is about an hour north of Alomogordo, down possible confusing dirt roads, and it is only open a day or two each year, so you'll have to do your homework. To the west of town is the White Sands National Monument, with its truly amazing dunes of white sand.

Other Secret Travel Destinations

Here in our hometown of Canon City, Colorado there is an area (Red Canyon Park) just ten miles out of town that has fantastic red rock formations like those in the more famous Garden of the Gods park in Colorado Springs. The difference? You won't ever feel crowded in this park, and you can climb on the rocks all you want, and explore slot canyons as well. How do you find out about travel destinations like this? Talk to the locals when you are traveling.

Scrambling - Hiking Safely In Rocky Terrain

After scrambling to the the summit of Mount Bushnell, I sat on a boulder that was cracked down the middle. Five seconds after my usual summit photo of my bare feet hanging over the edge, the left half of my rock fell loose. I watched as it bounced down the mountainside. I took out my crackers and continued to watch. The rock, and the others it had collected along the way, stopped about 500 feet below. I'm glad I chose the right side of the rock to sit on.

Later, scrambling down from the top, I slipped. I got a bruised leg from one rock, and a gash on one hand from another - the one that kept me from tumbling down the mountainside. The irony was that I rarely ever have a bad slip when hiking and climbing, and I had just stopped a moment earlier to take some notes on "safe scrambling" for this article. I guess the first safety lesson is to concentrate on the task at hand and take your notes later.

Scrambling, according to one dictionary, is "an ambiguous term - somewhere between hill-walking and rock climbing." It is a necessary part of hiking and backpacking in the mountains unless you are content to stick to the trails and always be looking up at the peaks. I'm not. I like to be looking down at everything from time to time. Since not all mountains have easy trails to the top, this sometimes means crossing long stretches of rock.

Of course, rock isn't a problem by itself. Sometimes it is solid and sloped gently, so you can hike across it easily. Other times, as on Mount Bushnell, it is loose, and mixed with almost vertical stretches which require your hands as much as your feet. Here are some tips for making this kind of scrambling a little bit safer.

Scrambling Tips

1. Beware of pulling rocks loose. You can use the rocks above you to steady yourself on steep parts, but try not to put much weight on them unless absolutely necessary. Remember that when they come loose, you are below them. More than one hiker has pulled a rock down upon himself with fatal results.

2. Big is better. When crossing loose rocks, try to step on the larger ones. They are less likely to move, and when they do move, they usually do so more slowly.

3. Stay away from each other. If there are two or more in your group, don't travel directly below each other on steep slopes. The rock that one person knocks loose will aim for the next in line. Keep some distance between you, and if ascending straight up, do so parallel to each other, ten feet or more apart.

4. Know your abilities. In particular, consider whether you'll be able to climb down the rocks you are scrambling up. Down is always more dangerous and usually more difficult.

5. Head for the grass. If you have a choice of routes, stick to those where the rocks are mixed with patches of grass. They are usually anchored more solidly here.

6. Learn to read the rocks. With experience you'll get a "feel" for which rocks are more likely to break loose, and which slopes are more easily climbed. Speed up this learning process by paying attention as you scramble, making rules as you go, like "these kind of boulders are slippery," and "that type of rock breaks easily."

7. Avoid wet rock. It's bad enough to have every second rock you step on move under your foot, but it's downright treacherous when they are slippery too. Wet usually equals slippery. Be aware of the surface of the rocks you are scrambling across, and whether it might rain before you get back down to the trail.

8. Use a walking stick If you'll be doing a lot of scrambling, you may want to consider using a walking stick instead of trekking poles. When I consider the number of times my walking stick was wedged between rocks or holding my weight the other day, I'm not sure that a trekking pole would have survived. A good walking stick can help with balance, reduce knee-strain, and take a lot of abuse.

Travel Bargains: A How-To Guide

There are two basic kinds of travel bargains. The first is what people normally think of, which is the special deals that show up from time to time on travel to popular destinations. If you are flexible and pay attention, you can often find a great package deal to Disney World, for example. If you have three trips in mind that you might enjoy (a cruise, a trip to Hawaii and a Vegas weekend, for example), you can wait for a special offer on one of them and increase your odds of a bargain vacation.

Then there are the other travel bargains. These are the "deals" that are always there, the affordable places to go and things to do that you can take advantage of without waiting for a special promotion. Here are a few examples.

Travel Bargains - Destinations

If you look at a map and use the internet to do a bit of research, there are probably many inexpensive places you can go within a couple hours of home. These are places where you can afford to stay and with activities that you like. For example, if you are traveling with kids and live near Michigan, you can go to the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes near Empire, Michigan, and then enjoy the beach at South Bar Lake.

An hour from there, you could visit the casino near Suttons Bay, and then drive Highway 22 and take in the views of Grand Traverse Bay. In Traverse City you can go to one of the water parks or hit the malls. In any case, hotels are very reasonable here, especially in the off-season.

If you live near Montana, you could visit Anaconda, a great little mountain town at the east end of the Anaconda-Pintler wilderness area. Hotels are under $100, (or just $140 for the week at the Harp and Thistle Inn) and there is a reasonably priced Jack Nicholas-designed golf course right in town. Nickel slot machines are in every casino here, and a movie at the beautiful Washoe Theater costs just $4.

The point here is that somewhere near you there are travel destinations that have what you need for entertainment and relaxation. Some of these are cheap enough to be travel bargains. So get out a map, get on the internet, and make a list!

Travel Bargains - Things To Do

There are also trips and vacations that are travel bargains just because they involve mostly cheap activities. To save money on that vacation, then, make a list of all the things that you might like to do. Then concentrate on the least expensive activities on that list and design a trip that will be everything you want it to be, and not cost much.

For example, if you enjoy treasure hunting with your metal detector, head for the nearest ghost towns or beaches. If you enjoy bicycling, find a new place to go and load up that bike. If you just want to relax on the beach, you live in the north, and its summer, skip the expensive ocean destinations and head for the Great Lakes.

You can wait and watch for the great travel promotions that show up from time to time. But the other way is to just plan for inexpensive destinations and activities. Often you'll find that you have even more fun on the trips that cost half as much. Now that's a travel bargain.

Medicine Bow - Hiking To A Plane Crash

On October 6, 1955, United Airlines Flight 409 crashed near the top of Medicine Bow Peak, killing all 66 people on board (63 passengers and 3 crew) - the worst crash in U.S. history at the time. Once the bodies were recovered, explosives and napalm were used to destroy the remains of the plane. But according to Wikipedia, there are still parts of the plane scattered near the summit, which I looked for as I climbed to the top on August 13, 2007.

In southern Wyoming, near the border of Colorado, are the Medicine Bow Mountains. The Snowy Range makes up the heart of them. It can be accessed by taking Highway 130 west from Laramie, or east from I-80, near Walcott. After coming through from Laramie and camping one night, we loved the area so much that we returned a week later to camp at Sugarloaf Campground, the highest campground in the area (perhaps one of the highest in the country?)

It was surprisingly warm considering that the campground is at almost 11,000 feet, and there were still large patches of snow visible all over the surrounding peaks. When I woke up at 5:45 Monday morning to climb the peak, I was able to start out in a t-shirt. Though I had a sweater and a jacket with me, I never used either, even at the windy summit.

I started early, thinking it would take several hours to reach the top. The summit did look close, but then mountain tops always look closer than they really are, so I assumed it was many mile away. My map didn't have a scale, so I really didn't know how far it would be. After hiking down the road to Lewis Lake, I picked up the trail just as the sun was just starting to come up.

Fifty minutes after I left the van, I was standing on the summit. This was the fastest I have ever gone up a mountain, but not because I was rushing. It was only a little over two miles, and the trail was easy. I looked around and took my usual photo of my bare feet hanging out from the top.

I didn't find any of the plane debris, but what I did see was a total of 26 beautiful alpine lakes, all counted as I stood on one rock looking down. Rocky slopes, alpine meadows, lakes and dark green forests were laid out in every direction I looked. I noted where we would backpack and camp on our next visit, and what peaks I might climb.

After 15 minutes or so I headed down, meeting three other hikers along the trail, all of whom pointed out the fact that my wife and I missed the meteor shower the previous night. It was so early that one person assumed I had spent the night on the summit of Medicine Bow Peak to watch the shooting stars. Hmm... maybe next year I will.

I might also find the pieces of that plane crash that eluded me. But in any case, we'll be back here. The Snowy Range around Medicine Bow Peak is one of the most beautiful places we have camped.

Travel Secret - Why Slow Is Better

Our top travel secret isn't really a secret at all, but it takes a while for some of us to learn and apply it. Here it is: Slow down. Slowing down and spending more time in each location is not only a secret of cheap travel, but in our experience, it means more fun.

Slowing Down For Cheap Travel

We returned yesterday (August 13, 2007) from a ten-day road trip, and I can report that going slower saved us money, as it usually does. This isn't just about driving less, though when we started driving 200 miles in a day instead of 600 we certainly saved on gas. However, we also found that with time on our hands, we could do a better job shopping for a place to stay or to eat.

Make the big mile days the ones that pass through the boring stretches. Then when you come to an interesting place, find nice, affordable lodging and stick around a while. Once, while driving around the country camping in our van, we discovered hot springs in a wild part of Arizona, with picnic tables and bathrooms and desert hills to explore - everything we needed at the time. It cost just $3 per night, so it was easy to stay a while.

In fact, we stayed for eight days, enjoying the hot pools even during an unusual snowy day in the desert. We took daily hikes and hunted for antiquities and rocks in the surrounding hills, but more on that in a moment. Just once, we drove into the nearest town for groceries and water, so the entire eight days might have cost us $80 or so. That's cheap travel.

Five years back we stumbled into a great mountain town where we wanted to stay a while. We were in town early, instead of our usual driving until evening and scrambling to find a hotel, so we had time to check things out without rushing. We asked around and heard about a hotel above a pub. The rest of the hotel rooms in town were generally $60 per night and up, but we got a room above the pub for $120 - for an entire week. It had a stove and refrigerator, so we could cook our own meals if we wanted to save more.

Slowing Down Means Better Travel Experiences

More important than the fact that slowing down means cheap travel is the fact that when you go slower you discover things you would have missed. While at the hot springs mentioned above, for example, we we befriended a Mayan Indian who brought us to an old Pony Express station in the desert hills. It still had parts of the old walls remaining.

He showed us areas where we could find old arrowheads, and we found some. Out in the middle of the desert, he showed us perfectly round holes that had been drilled into the rocks hundreds of years earlier. They were used for water storage. In our van, we followed him to an area where ancient pottery littered the desert, and where gemstones could be found as well.

We wouldn't have found these things on our own. The experiences were also only possible because we didn't rush from one park to another, trying to fit as many "sights" into a trip as possible. It may not be a secret that a slow trip can be more interesting, but not many people seem to want to try this more relaxing, slower pace.

Where we stayed a week for $140 in that mountain town, we discovered area waterfalls and secret mountain lakes that only the locals knew about. The town was our base as we made trips into the surrounding area. Talking to people in local bars lead us to a well-preserved ghost town that wasn't on our map. Its streets were still full of buildings and foundations, but no tourists - one other car pulled in while we were there.

Our travel secret number one: slow down to save money and enjoy the trip more.

The Basilica In Vatican City

In all of Christendom, no church can be found that even comes close to that of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. This is one of the most impressive sites that any Christian will ever see in all of their life. The Basilica has art by the likes of Michelangelo, and at one time, the Basilica itself was being designed by Michelangelo. A good Rome City tour can lead one to this impressive building, and in fact, it would be very hard to miss in this holy city.

When one enters St. Peter's Basilica they might not notice that it is in the shape of a Latin cross, with the dome being in the center of the crossing. The alter, which is in the middle of this Catholic city church, is built directly above the tomb of St. Peter the Apostle, of whom the Bible states that Christ built his church upon. One unique feature of the dome of the Basilica is that Michelangelo nearly finished the drum before his death.

Many things exist for one to see in Vatican City at St. Peter's Basilica. However, if one wants to go inside the Basilica to view anything, then they must be prepared to cover up. No matter if one is male or female; they cannot wear shorts nor have bare shoulders. If a person does, then they will be turned away and will not be allowed into the Basilica. Many people who are not Roman Catholic may not be expecting this, so one should be prepared when going to visit this holy shrine.

Vatican City offers so much for everyone to see no matter if they are Catholic or not. One of the best places to visit is St. Peter's Basilica. Everything from sacred tombs to historical art can be seen with just one of the many tours to this Catholic city church. A good rule of thumb is to allow a full day to experience this marvelous sight for those who are Christians, and one should also considering purchasing tickets beforehand to keep standing in line to a minimum.

Why Mount Fuji Remains A Popular Destination

Both the Japanese and people of different nationalities have aspired to scale the peak of Mount Fuji at least once in their lives. There are also millions of tourists who embark on a Mt Fuji tour every year in order to experience the journey. It is considered to be dormat, but experts have been predicting a possible eruption in the near future. So why are millions of people risking their lives to scale Japan's highest mountain peak?

To first understand that, one must take into account the symbolism of Mount Fuji in both Japan and across the world. The volcano is the tallest peak in the country at a height of over 12,000 feet at its highest point. As with many other well known mountains across Japan, Mount Fuji has its own legends that tell of its rise and fall, and permeates the folk stories of the Japanese. This has led to much love and respect shown for the snow covered volcano by the Japanese.

The extent of their admiration for Mount Fuji can be seen in the many other smaller Fuji-sans sprinkled all across Japan. These are all minor peaks that have been named after the original mountain. They serve to be an image of the mountain in their own backyard so that they do not need to go on a Mt Fuji budget one day tour. Countless origami books have also been made to show how Mount Fuji can be folded from paper in the traditions of the art.

The symbol of Japan also fills the capital's landscape as Tokyo's west side is dominated by the sight of Mount Fuji. Mount Fuji is said to be very shy in nature as it often hides its peak behind clouds or haze. It is said that Mount Fuji's peak can only been seen clearly and unblocked by weather for ten days out of the every calendar year. That rare occurrence perhaps adds to the mystic of the mountain.

A more negative aspect of the attraction that Mount Fuji holds for many individuals is the power and control it has over the immediate areas surrounding it. While the volcano has been dormant for centuries, geographical experts have predicted that Mount Fuji is due to stir with activity in time. Tokyo and many other cities could suffer a terrible fate if that were to happen, and it is perhaps why there are also Japanese legends which have led its people to worship gods and other deities that might be connected to Mount Fuji, praying for their safety and peace. However, Fuji-san is also an enabler of economic well-being, with numerous cheap Mount Fuji hotels surrounding it, not to mention in Hakone and nearby resort towns.

Perhaps the final sign of how much the volcano mountain is revered in Japan is the sight of its peak shown on the country's 1,000 yen note. It is also the most common denomination of the Japanese currency, and perhaps symbolic of the importance of Mount Fuji in the people's psyche for it to be used in such a way. The life and death of millions of Japanese are held in the cradle of Mount Fuji's existence, and it is therefore hard to ignore the allure and attraction the beautiful mountain peak has throughout history.

Looking into Binocular History

Japanese Binocular Soccer

Binoculars were developed from the telescope. There are written references to telescopic optical instruments in documents originating before Galileo but the exact origin of the telescope is not really known.

One thing that is known with certainty is that the first patent application took place in 1608. A Dutch eyeglass maker named Jan Lippershey applied for a 30 year patent. He was then asked to make an optical instrument that could be used by two eyes and on December 9th 1608 he announced the completion of the world's first binocular instrument.

These early optical devices used quartz rather than glass due to the poor quality of the glass that was available at that time. These early devices were known as Galilean binoculars. In fact some historians claim that Galileo is actually the true inventor of binoculars. In 1618 he is reported to have produced a helmet featuring a twin telescope attachment intended to be used on board ships.

Although binoculars were available in the 17th and 18th centuries it wasn't until the early 19th that the quality of these instruments became any good. It was in the 1820s that Vienna based Johann Voigtlander designed and produced the first binoculars that featured extended eye tubes for focussing.

By the mid 19th century Galilean opera glasses or theatre glasses had become immensely popular. These ornate binoculars were very much the fashion accessory of the day. Some were extremely ornate featuring gold, silver, mother of pearl and enamel. Today these binoculars are highly sought after by collectors.

It was in the 1890s when the first prismatic binoculars became available. Today's prismatic binoculars use the same optical design as these early models.

Today binoculars are an essential tool used in countless situations. From ships at sea to bird watching, exploring and orienteering. A pair of binoculars should be on everyone's list of essential hiking or camping equipment.

Common Amenities You Will Find Aboard A Cruise Ship

Each year a large number of individuals consider vacationing aboard a cruise ship.  If you have never been on a cruise ship before, you may be wondering what activities, facilities, and services can be found onboard.  The activities found onboard a cruise ship will vary from ship to ship, but many cruise ships have a number of activities and services in common.

Some of the most well-known facilities found on cruise ships are dining halls, restaurants, and cafeterias.  Large cruise ships may offer a number of onboard dining facilities.  It is important to note that many of these dining facilities are considered upscale restaurants. There are usually a number of small eateries located onboard in addition to a sit-down restaurant.  Elegant dining restaurants are popular among cruisers.

Aside from dining facilities, you can also find bars and dancehalls. Most of the bars and dancehalls on land may have age restrictions in place.  If you are traveling with your family, you are in luck because most cruise ships have daycare centers and other activities geared towards children of all ages.

When it comes to placing your child in the care of a ship's daycare center, you are urged to quickly familiarize yourself with the staff.  This familiarization may help to calm your nerves. The cruise ship employees are often closely monitored, highly educated, and properly trained.  While it may be difficult at first, you should feel comfortable leaving your child in the care of a cruise ship childcare worker.

Childcare is ideal for smaller children, if your children are teenagers, there are another options for them.  Swimming pools, libraries, video arcades, and movie theaters can often be found on cruise ships.  Adult supervision is a policy that prevents children under a certain age from roaming freely around the ship.

In addition to the above mentioned bars and dancehalls, gaming halls or casinos can be found on most cruise ships.Gambling on land are most limited to some people below age of 18, but those can gamble aboard a cruise ship.  Popular gambling activities include slots, blackjack, poker, and much more. Most of onboard casinos are open for twenty-four hours a day.  Gambling is a popular cruise ship pastime.

Cruise ship operators know that many travelers take a cruise to escape their daily routines.  Unfortunately for some, one routine that cannot be left behind is exercise. It is why almost all cruise ships have GYM and fitness centers.  These gyms are often similar, and sometimes even better, than the gyms found in your hometown.

The activities mentioned above can be found on most of popular cruise lines. These cruise lines are likely to include, but are not limited to, Carnival Cruise Lines, Paradise Cruises, Royal Caribbean cruises, and Celebrity Cruises.  With the click of a mouse or a toll free phone call, you can easily determine if your favorite activities can be found aboard the cruise ship of your choice.

KU Summer Camps—Guidelines for You

Most of American summer camps are regulated by a number of independent bodies that are assigned the job of monitoring and inspecting all aspects of the summer camp. Their role involves looking at safety measures, standards, health and every other regulation that the course and camp must attain in order to stay open.

There are camps that can not meet the standards set, and falls short on a number of inspection points then it will not be allowed to remain in operation. The most common issue is related to the camper's safety. Suppose you have small kids, then you will also need to know that all day camps and play schemes offering full day-care courses and other services for very young children (under the age of eight) have a legal need to register with their local department and obtain a certificate to operate. If you prefer the option summer camps USA, they are vetted and regularly inspected.

The next question to cover is the price of summer camps for kids and teens. This is also a very common question for parents and those who are going to ultimately be funding the camp experience. A typical type of camp rate for one week will cost about $3500 whereas some summer camps that last eight weeks long will cost about $7000. The fee-structure can seem surprisingly high, but these fees will cover all the general activities, medical care, all the food and also laundry.

If your children would like to take part in extra activities, then there may be an extra payment required (for things like field trips and more outdoor activities). Make it clear before you join a summer camp.

If your child is looking to attend a camp with a special focus, then it is likely to cost more than normal. The more in-depth the training and the more specialised the instruction, the more money it will cost. Canada summer camps are such rewarding option you can choose.

Use These Great Ideas When Traveling Away On A Business Trip

Like any American, traveling once in a while is just what I love doing and I bet you share the same stuff with me. Just because you're taking a vacation doesn't mean you're going to be safe. But we should never disregard the fact that danger or any trouble can always get in our way no matter where we go. Today, I'm going to give you a few safety tips so that you can be assured that you're safe on your trip. One of the first things is to find discount luggage sets for sale. If you do not travel often then the cheaper luggage is the way to go.

It is most likely that you would carry a discount luggage sets with you when you journey but see to it that putting your address in your case is something that you would never do. Your baggage might have a tag on it so make sure that only your name and phone number are written in case it gets lost. This will assure you that your case will be returned if you happen to misplace it for that individual who wants to return it will know how to find you.

The reason for this is because if the thief finds something precious in your baggage, he might think that chances are that there are more worthwhile things at home. It's always a safe bet just to leave your first and last name.

Let me tell you something about any essential document to be carried. Your baggage should only contain things you can afford to lose like clothing. Precious and valuable things like passport, charge card and other papers should never be kept inside your luggage. If someone had stolen these items, just as I mentioned on my last tip - that thief is more likely to get a hold of all or most of the essential information about you.

Stop showing off: Some people love to exhibit their wealth in public, but in real life, probably are neck-deep in debts. If you wear some flashy costly jewelry, you're more likely to be pursued by a thief and ending you up in a place and situation where you never wanted to be. When it comes to traveling, don't be flashy, nobody cares what you look like and how much money you don't have. Think of it: do you really care to know more about somebody just for the way they dress?

Clean out the wallet: Check your notecase for any junk sheets and other useless items to avoid unnecessary bulk during your next trip. It is highly recommended by most experts to just leave some of your important papers and other charge cards at home in a safe vault so that you will not bulk yourself with those multiple credit cards that might only get lost. It's always best to take along at least one charge card. Make a note of the number that you need to contact in case the charge card you carry gets stolen so that you can call immediately to cancel out any transaction.

Considering all of the many available tips with regards to traveling and safety, your judgment at its best is needed for you to choose what's effective and what's not. The main thing to remember is to not be flashy and not bring things that are of value. If you want to be hailed as the safest traveler ever existed, then you might want to consider on the tip which is to bring along with you only those things that wont hurt you much if you happen to lose them.

Parisian bars to be seen at: Ladurée le Bar

Ladurée le Bar in Paris

Desperately searching for one of the most luxurious bars in Paris? Staying in luxurious paris apartments? If you can find a few euros, you should be ok? If so, lucky you! As there is a bar in the centre of Parisian nightlife that is calling your name as we speak. Find “Ladurée le Bar” at 75 avenue des Champs-Élysées Paris VIII or 13 rue Lincoln Paris VIII (Tel: 01 40 75 08 75).

Since having opened in September 2008, Ladurée le Bar has been a big success with Parisians alike. Having reached the top in terms of delicious sweets and treats, Ladurée saw fit to expand into a new and booming market and opened Le Bar. Displaying an exciting menu of savoury dishes as well as a sumptuous cocktail to complement, it goes without saying that Le Bar is the ultimate in sophistication.

The décor is stunning. If only my paris accommodation looked like this bar! The bar looks like that of an underwater coral, undulating in the middle of the room as the centre piece with an array of stools and blue lights that illuminate it. The bar is the brainchild of antiques dealer Roxane Rodriguez, and is a flamoboyant neo Art Nouveau creation and nothing like the traditional dining room of the original Ladurée patisserie that we all know and love. Also, the glittery bar has fairy lights and stained glass in which butterflies are trapped.

After the overall stunning appearance of the bar comes the menu, which is carefully compiled to bring you the best. One of the best dishes is organic pumpkin soup with royal scampi, blue Breton lobster carpaccio and loin of veal carpaccio. You'll love the deserts, why not try; "Millefeuille framboise” consisting off caramelized puff pastry, whipped cream, light vanilla cream and fresh raspberries.

Ladurée has come so far that it now has a tea salon, restaurant, pastry shop, chocolate shop, ice cream parlour and a fantastic bar serving its trademark delicious macaroon cocktail. Needless to say, a trip to one of these Ladurée premises and a couple of chocolates or cocktails later will put a smile on your face.

The Pound is Getter Weaker and Weaker, Say Bye Bye to Sunny Destinations

You have probably been living in the jungle if you are not aware that we have been in one of the worst economic situations that we have had for decades and it does not seem to be getting better any time soon. One of the worst affected countries has to be the UK.

The reason for the big drop is in large part because it reflects Britain's economic prospects. The UK is facing a nasty recession - one that is likely to be as bad as any experienced by the Western world. House prices are falling at the fastest rate
since the 1930s, unemployment is on the rise and will soon climb beyond two million, consumer spending is sliding.

Sterling fell broadly on in 2009; sinking to a fresh 23-year low against the dollar, as data showed the UK economy shrank at its fastest pace since 1980 and confirmed Britain had fallen into recession for the first time in nearly 20 years. The fall marked truly that

The UK has always been known for its strong currency of sterling, it is one of the strongest in the world. UK tourists have always found it nice to go on holidays abroad as it was much cheaper than staying in the UK.

But how times change and things switch around, the sterling has now lost its weight and UK family holidays look as though they will be the next big thing. Already a lot more people are staying in the UK this summer so that they can budget, this has made caravan holidays a lot busier.

Who knows how long the weakness of the sterling will last, the government may even decide to replace it with the Euro if things continue to go how they have been going for the past few months.

UK Holidays have Grown

When people think of a holiday they think about the sun, water and sand at an overseas destination. Britain's spend millions of there hard earned cash every year to give to the overseas tourism industry. But which was until now, things look to be getting better for the UK travel industry in this 12 month period as most Brits will be staying onshore due to the power of the Euro and the credit crunch.

More than fifty percent of Brits are trying to save themselves money by going to a UK destination for their holidays. But more than 60% of Brits said they were unable to give up completely going on holiday, because they need the break and time to relax so they are just trying to keep costs down by visiting the UK.

Caravan holidays destinations have had to quickly employ more staff due to the sudden increase in these types of holidays. Places such as Haven and Butlins are cashing in on the credit crunch. UK coach operators should also be set for the summer as it is certain they will see a huge increase in bookings.

Evidence has also come to light that customers have cut back on aeroplane travel. Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted collectively saw a drop of 2.8% last year canalysed with 2007, with Stansted seeing the largest fall, 6%.

An Abta spokesman said: "People are still booking holidays abroad but in the last few weeks our members have reported that holidaymakers are cutting back and opting for self-catering and all-inclusive holidays."

So it just goes to show you that when one industry suffers, such as travelling abroad another industry emerges triumphs. Maybe the credit crunch is good in some aspects as it will filter out all of the companies that are under achieving and just not offering good enough products, leaving room in saturated markets to see a new breed of successful start-up businesses.

Buy Great Gifts from Germany

Wanting to visit Germany and can't decide which of the countless tour options offered online suits you? That is quite understandable, as the variety of choices reflect the diversity of a country which played an important role in world events since ancient times. Unfortunately, the available choices are often run-of-the-mill tours, copying what has proven to be successful itineraries and destinations and offering virtually the same activities which most jaded travelers avoid. It is even more unfortunate as these tours give the impression that the offered attractions are the only things one can enjoy in Germany, which is quite erroneous. Germany offers much more than visiting the landmarks in Berlin and Munich, or taking a tour of the Rhineland, or taking part in rowdy Oktoberfest parties, or visiting the vineyards in the Ahr region. If you're a history buff, why not try an underground tour - where one is transported back in time to see Berlin's civilian shelters or the Meseritz Fortifications used in WW2? For those interested in lighter, happier themes, doing the Christmas Market tour may just be the holiday for you.

You might have heard about the German Christmas Market, a centuries-old tradition which was believed to have started in the 1620s and which continue to be observed by the Germans today. What you should do is schedule your trip to Germany around December, when the Christmas Markets are open. To make your vacation a real and unique treat, you should plan a trip that will cover as many Christmas Markets as you can during your stay. This means that you'll plan your trip not just around one or two cities, but all the major ones that has great Christmas Markets, from Berlin all the way to Munich, Cologne and Hamburg, including towns in between. Your vacation will thus become a huge shopping trip.

If you are tired of the unimaginative products available in department stores back home which you are forced to buy for your loved ones every year, you should take your trip as an opportunity to buy really great gifts for them. The Christmas Markets that emerge in all four corners of Germany during the Yuletide season offer a vast array of products seen nowhere else: exquisite handicrafts such as nutcrackers, wooden figurines, straw stars and smokers, cookie tins, glass balls, toys, and tin tree ornaments. This is your once-in-a-lifetime chance to do what the Germans have been doing since the 17th century - buying Christmas gifts in these traditional markets. One of the markets you shouldn't miss is the one in Berlin. Despite the deluge of shoppers in this Christmas market, you surely would not regret going there as you'll find here new, fresh products that are just being introduced to the German public.

Amid your shopping, don't forget to take in the authentic German traditions and celebrations that are being held to make each German Christmas Market more memorable and unique. Relive the Pied Piper's path in Hamelin, where the old fashioned Christmas market is held in ancient streets filled with half-timbered buildings, much like as it were in the popular legend. The nativity scene (creche) here is unique, too, as it is actually a petting zoo, which will surely bring much fun for kids. More fun for the kids awaits you in Heidelberg, as activities like baking cookies and making candles are held especially for them. You may find it tiring going to the different Christkindlsmarkt locations, but the rare opportunity to experience something really unique  is quite worth it.

Convenient Connections from Continental Airlines

Continental 757 Takes off from Bristol Airport

Although UK's Bristol Airport provides direct flights to only two US destinations many travellers are using the extensive Continental Airlines network to reach final destinations within the United States and beyond.

The top five business traveller destinations from Bristol airport were: Houston, Chicago, Indianapolis, Atlanta and Cleveland during 2008.

The most popular destinations for leisure passengers during the same period were Orlando, Las Vegas, Boston, San Francisco and Tampa.

Continental airlines has a long and illustrious history extending back over 70 years after being established, in 1934, by Walter T.Varney and Louis Mueller. It was Robert Six who, in 1937, changed the company name to Continental Airlines and moved the company headquarters from El Paso to Denver in the same year.

During the war years Continental Airlines were responsible for the maintenance of B-17 flying fortresses and B-29 super fortresses at their Denver modifications center. Their experience during the war years led to the establishment of their trans-pacific service under the name of Air Micronesia. It was during the 1970s that Continental airline's list of services increased dramatically including the introduction of new routes from Los Angeles to New Zealand and Australia. Continental Airlines' list of destinations includes over 500 airports worldwide, extending way beyond the boundaries of North America.

The Continental Airlines service flying between Bristol and New York has made it easy for travellers to book onward flights. Around 50% of the travellers flying from Bristol have used the Continental airlines network to reach their final destinations after picking up a connecting flight in New York. Since its introduction over three years ago in May 2005 the New York service has carried over 250,000 passengers.

The Continental airlines network makes planning and booking a journey, either for business or pleasure, hassle free and the convenience of starting out from Bristol is, for many travellers, an added bonus.
