Alicante - An Ideal Touring Base

Because it is a gateway to the Costa Blanca, Alicante is an excellent centre for touring. Offering a delightful mixture of ancient and modern culture and traditions, Alicante is found within the popular tourist region of the Costa Blanca. Visitors to Alicante will enjoy sunny and warm climate, a selection of the best beaches Spain has to offer together with some great examples of Moorish architecture.

Found on the coast between the resorts of Elche and Benidorm, Alicante city sits in the shadow of its mountain-topped castle. Alicante and the surrounding areas are scattered with churches with the most recognised of them all being the Iglesia de Santa Maria. This is the oldest church in the city and was built between the 14th and 16th centuries with the church originally being a mosque. The Cathedral of Saint Nicholas was built in the seventeenth century to honour the city's patron saint and is thus one of the most significant buildings in the region.

Alicante has lots of old buildings to please sightseers and historians alike and can be found all around the city with statues and columns adding interest to lots of a formerly uninspiring site. Providing a sharp eye out to Alicante Bay, the Castillo de Santa Barbara is recognised as one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. Readily reached by car or by elevator (lift) from the Paseo Maritimo, the castle has unsurpassed views of the stunning local region. Apart from the wonders the Castillo offers, Alicante has further ancient treasures in the form of the nineteenth century bullring and the Provincial Gallery (formerly the Gavina Palace). All of the Alicante sights are easily accessible with the help of a rental car from Alicante Airport. Arranging your car rental online would be expected to save you money together with ensuring that the model of car that you want to book is definitely when you arrive at the airport.

Alicante is the perfect venue to come to enjoy life and the main reason guests return every year. With such a huge range of hotel rooms on offer, there are plenty of luxury Alicante hotels to suit every taste and pocket. The beaches here consist of wonderful golden sand and offer a variety of both accessible as well as hidden coves ideal for private sunbathing. Drive over to Albufereta Beach for outstanding water sport capabilities. It is a quiet spot that is generally undiscovered by the majority of holidaymakers.

The perfect location for an evening stroll is provided by the Playa del Postiguet. You will join the locals along this attractive seaside promenade - it's a ideal location for a romantic evening. Formerly known as the Port of Madrid, Alicante Harbour combines sailing with fishing and is the perfect venue to come to find the top fish restaurants in town. The harbour offers a perfect venue for activity night and day. Here is where visitors come to eat superbly delicious, fresh seafood, learn to sail and enjoy a bout of clubbing into the small hours.

Nobody likes a knees up as much as the inhabitants and visitors of Alicante! Here you will find an event of one type or another happening much of the year, no matter what time of the year you choose to visit. One of the more sombre of Costa Blanca festivals is that of the Easter Procession. Wearing black and carrying candles, a model of Jesus is carried on a cross through the streets. Each November, in remembrance of the Patron Saint Crist del Bon Encert, each town has its own fiesta. Don't be surprised to find that shops are closed all day, every day as the town closes down for this wonderful combination of singing, dancing and firework displays. On a less religious note, one of the most well known local fiestas is the International Puppet Festival.
