Why A Down Sleeping Bag?

A down sleeping bag has its problems. They are usually more delicate than bags with synthetic fill, for example. They also lose almost all of their insulating ability when they are wet. Of course, you could just treat them gently. My own down bag is over ten years old now, and has no tears and no substantial loss of down. I have slept in some pretty rough conditions with it too. Pay attention to anything sharp or abrasive and even the most delicate bag can last for a decade or more.

I have also managed to keep my down sleeping bag dry during some nasty conditions. I once backpacked for seven days in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado when it was raining at some point during every day and every night. My bag never got wet, and I was sleeping under a tarp the whole time. So you can keep a bag dry if you try. That takes care of the negatives. Now for a look at the positives.

Down Sleeping Bags Are Still The Lightest

I don't really buy equipment that often now, so I had to look at what was out there to see if the above claim was still true. It is. The synthetics are getting closer and closer in terms of warmth for the weight of the fill, but they can't yet match down. It may not be a big difference, but for those like myself who like to backpack in the mountains with less than ten pounds in the pack, every ounce counts.

My own bag, by the way, weighs just 17 ounces. It is rated down to 40 degrees Fahrenheit, but I have used it comfortably below freezing many times. It is from Western Mountaineering.

Down Sleeping Bags - Other Advantages

Perhaps a bigger advantage than the weight savings (those synthetics are close, after all), is space savings. None of the synthetic-fill sleeping bags can pack down anywhere near as small as a down bag. Mine is the size of a loaf of bread when packed. This makes a difference when you have a small pack or a big trip. In fact, I take advantage of the space savings and do over-nighters with a day pack - something I couldn't do with a less compressible bag.

Finally, down sleeping bags last longer. The best synthetic fills seem to start losing loft after just a year or two, and they can't be reconditioned much. A down bag, on the other hand, can be fluffed up in the dryer and may have most of its loft even after ten years if stored properly (unstuffed).

There are certainly times and places for the synthetics. You might not want to backpack in the Olympic National Park's rain forest with down, for example. But if you have to choose just one bag for all-round use, and you like to go light, you should seriously consider a down sleeping bag.

The colorful Dutch colonial architecture is delightful to see. Here you can explore the island and see many wonderful sights such as the California Lighthouse by caravan. Oranjestad also has beautiful beaches and snorkeling is a great adventure.

The next stop that the ship docks at is off the Venezuelan coast at Willemstad, Curacao. Of the three "ABC" Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao), Curacao is the largest and most populated.In 1954 it separated from the Netherlands yet you will find that there is still a very strong Dutch influence in its architecture and its culture. You can explore the magnificent Hato Caves and underground lake here in Willemstad. What an awesome sight it was to see this underground world. There is also a trolley-train tour that is enjoyable.

The next stop will be on the northeastern coast of the Caribbean at Philipsburg, Saint Maarten. There are two sides to this island, the Dutch and French. On the Dutch side you can find beautiful jewelry, excellent beaches, and night festivities. The French side of the Caribbean is known for its nude beaches and clothing stores to shop in. Because of the many duty-free shops the island is known as a shopper's paradise. Jewelry, leather goods, tobacco, designer clothes are some of the things you find here.

Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands is the last stop for this fabualous cruise. Purchased by the United States, Saint Thomas has so much to offer. Here the shopping is excellent, the dining is magnificent, and the white sandy beaches are breathtaking. While you are in Saint Thomas you do not want to miss the spectacular view of Magens Bay from the very famous Drakes Seat.

So, we are officially in recession (like we hadn’t already noticed!and I haven't heard one definitive answer on when the economy will grow again.

It’s that time of year where I start to think about where I want to go on holiday, but I want to be a little bit more careful with my pennies this year. My money can't be spent to the same level abroad now and cheap flights aren't as available as they were before this credit mess. What if I book a flight and the company folds before my holiday or leaves me stranded on a tropical island (well, that wouldm't be so bad!)!).

I was chatting to a friend last night about my conundrum – explaining that I wanted a holiday full of FUN and laughter as I am fed up of hearing all about the credit crunch but at the same time I was living it so have to spend carefully. A holiday in Wales is what he suggested. Wales!! Really!? I thought the weather was crap there! And it’s full of sheep, leaks and daffodils and, and, and Wales holiday cottages and blokes named Dafydd!

Apparently, ‘it’s not unusual’, for people to stereotype Wales and the Welsh in this way - the weather is a little dodgy and there are blokes named Dafydd (but not all of them) but there is so much to do that the weather doesn’t spoil a thing. He kindly informed me that preparing for bad weather means that good weather is an added treat.

So, I decided to take a look for myself. I jumped onto my laptop, fired up the internet access and plunged into a world of Wales on the web. I love youtube.com. It's perfect for the lazy surfer.com – saves me reading stuff and I found the following video which is part of an advertising campaign for visitwales.co.uk suggesting things you can do in Wales.

Apparently you can go cycling, play at boats with kids, stay in a blue hotel (which looks like a toy – holiday cottages Wales stylie!) which is full of local stuff like the blankets, the art on the wall – even the beds. Rock climbing, and then throwing yourself off a cliff into water, drink welsh wine, eat crab and sausages (Welsh surf and turf – tee hee!), or Michelin star cuisine made with local produce. My god, the list is exhaustive.

So, yep – I’m sold – I’m going to give it a go, safely in the knowledge that I am helping our slowing economy by keeping British money in Britain.

Where To Find A Wilderness Survival Guide

 

After 6 months of getting lost in the woods, one camper was rescued by rescue workers and policemen and firemen after they found him half dead from starvation and dehydration. He went camping with his classmates half a year ago and he got lost from the gang. Fortunately, he survived. Have it not been for the wilderness survival skills he learned before they went out camping, he could have been found dead floating in a river or in the mouth of a hungry bear, in pieces.

It is just correct for anyone to teach himself how to survive in the wilderness. You can get lost among these mesmerizing sight of tall trees, the clear blue sky and the clear white water crystal. There are already many incidents of people getting lost in the woods, in the mountains and some of them were never found. It’s always highly recommended by proper authorities that if ever you want to go hiking or camping in them woods, you need to train yourself first some survival skills training or if not, you can hire somebody to be your guide who knows the place like it was the back of his hand.

But availing the services of someone who is an expert to be the guide can also be too costly, that is, if ever you can find somebody. Sometimes, other individuals can be too pre-occupied doing their own personal obligations and works that are eating their time and you can’t do something about. That’s why, if ever you want something done, you have to do it by yourself. Now, the query is, if ever you want to go out and have some good time in the wild, where can you find something that can teach you some wilderness survival talents? You see, that guy who stayed alive his 6-months suffering in the wilderness found a guide on the Net and that’s what made him live a little longer to tell his tale wherever he goes.

Undiscovered Travel Destinations

Not all travel destinations are packed full of tourists. In fact, not all of them are even on the map. I have had an interest in these "secret" places since I first discovered two little lakes high in the hills and cliffs north of Ishpeming, Michigan. No trails even lead to these, and there was a trout on the line ten seconds after the cast.

Other travel destinations are not so isolated, but they are still generally overlooked by most tourists. This was true of Yelapa, Mexico when I went there in 1981. The beaches were uncrowded, you could buy fresh fish for dinner from the fishermen in the afternoon, and a palapa (thatched-roof house) rented for about $100 per month. The surrounding jungle had waterfalls you could swim under. No roads lead there, but there was a daily boat from nearby Puerto Vallarta.

Yelapa, alas, has been discovered and overrun with tourists now. Often being one myself, I have nothing against tourists. But when the crowd gets too thick I prefer the more secret places. Here are some examples of a few of these travel destinations that are still undiscovered.

Storm Lake

Anaconda, Montana is a fun destination by itself. You can rent a room above the Harp and Thistle Pub for $140 for the week (as of August 2007) and be within walking distance of at least ten casinos with nickel slot machines, as well as a new brew pub and restaurant (Rocky Mountain Brewing). Two blocks away, the Washoe Theater, considered one of the most beautiful in the country by the Smithsonian Institute, charges just $4 for a movie, and 90 cents for a small popcorn. A Jack Nicholas-designed golf course (The Old Works Golf Course) is just at the edge of this small town.

If you really want to escape, though, drive 14 miles west on Highway 1. When you see the sign that says "Storm Lake," turn there. It's nine miles to the lake (stay left when the road splits), but you may need high clearance for the last mile (although we used to make it there in our Ford Escort). There will usually be a few locals at the lake, but you'll always find a place to park.

The lake sits at about 8,000 feet, and is known locally for its cutthroat trout. Hike the trail along the right side and on the other side you'll find the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness Area. Less than hour up the trail you'll reach Storm Lake Pass, at the tree line. From here you can continue into the tundra environment of Goat Meadows, or into a seemingly endless wilderness of mountains and lakes. You'll rarely have any company other than the bears and birds and mountain goats.

Alamogordo, New Mexico

This is not at the top of most tourists lists, which is good for those of us that like our travel destinations to be uncrowded. It is a great little town, however, and a great base from which to explore the surrounding area. It is also a nice place to escape the winter, since it rarely snows or gets too cold here.

You can check out the little zoo right in town for a relaxing afternoon. There is also an Imax Theater on the north side of town (watch for the signs), and you probably won't have any long lines to wait in. On Saturdays from June to October you can visit the Farmers market at the county fairgrounds.

If you want to get up above the desert, drive the thirty minutes or so up to Cloudcroft in the nearby mountains, or go a little further the observatory at Sunspot, or to the Casino in Ruidoso. If you time it right, you can bask in the sun one day in Alamogordo and be skiing the next day at the Cloudcroft Ski Area.

For an unusual destination, you can visit the Trinity Test Site, where the first nuclear bomb was exploded. It is about an hour north of Alomogordo, down possible confusing dirt roads, and it is only open a day or two each year, so you'll have to do your homework. To the west of town is the White Sands National Monument, with its truly amazing dunes of white sand.

Other Secret Travel Destinations

Here in our hometown of Canon City, Colorado there is an area (Red Canyon Park) just ten miles out of town that has fantastic red rock formations like those in the more famous Garden of the Gods park in Colorado Springs. The difference? You won't ever feel crowded in this park, and you can climb on the rocks all you want, and explore slot canyons as well. How do you find out about travel destinations like this? Talk to the locals when you are traveling.

Scrambling - Hiking Safely In Rocky Terrain

After scrambling to the the summit of Mount Bushnell, I sat on a boulder that was cracked down the middle. Five seconds after my usual summit photo of my bare feet hanging over the edge, the left half of my rock fell loose. I watched as it bounced down the mountainside. I took out my crackers and continued to watch. The rock, and the others it had collected along the way, stopped about 500 feet below. I'm glad I chose the right side of the rock to sit on.

Later, scrambling down from the top, I slipped. I got a bruised leg from one rock, and a gash on one hand from another - the one that kept me from tumbling down the mountainside. The irony was that I rarely ever have a bad slip when hiking and climbing, and I had just stopped a moment earlier to take some notes on "safe scrambling" for this article. I guess the first safety lesson is to concentrate on the task at hand and take your notes later.

Scrambling, according to one dictionary, is "an ambiguous term - somewhere between hill-walking and rock climbing." It is a necessary part of hiking and backpacking in the mountains unless you are content to stick to the trails and always be looking up at the peaks. I'm not. I like to be looking down at everything from time to time. Since not all mountains have easy trails to the top, this sometimes means crossing long stretches of rock.

Of course, rock isn't a problem by itself. Sometimes it is solid and sloped gently, so you can hike across it easily. Other times, as on Mount Bushnell, it is loose, and mixed with almost vertical stretches which require your hands as much as your feet. Here are some tips for making this kind of scrambling a little bit safer.

Scrambling Tips

1. Beware of pulling rocks loose. You can use the rocks above you to steady yourself on steep parts, but try not to put much weight on them unless absolutely necessary. Remember that when they come loose, you are below them. More than one hiker has pulled a rock down upon himself with fatal results.

2. Big is better. When crossing loose rocks, try to step on the larger ones. They are less likely to move, and when they do move, they usually do so more slowly.

3. Stay away from each other. If there are two or more in your group, don't travel directly below each other on steep slopes. The rock that one person knocks loose will aim for the next in line. Keep some distance between you, and if ascending straight up, do so parallel to each other, ten feet or more apart.

4. Know your abilities. In particular, consider whether you'll be able to climb down the rocks you are scrambling up. Down is always more dangerous and usually more difficult.

5. Head for the grass. If you have a choice of routes, stick to those where the rocks are mixed with patches of grass. They are usually anchored more solidly here.

6. Learn to read the rocks. With experience you'll get a "feel" for which rocks are more likely to break loose, and which slopes are more easily climbed. Speed up this learning process by paying attention as you scramble, making rules as you go, like "these kind of boulders are slippery," and "that type of rock breaks easily."

7. Avoid wet rock. It's bad enough to have every second rock you step on move under your foot, but it's downright treacherous when they are slippery too. Wet usually equals slippery. Be aware of the surface of the rocks you are scrambling across, and whether it might rain before you get back down to the trail.

8. Use a walking stick If you'll be doing a lot of scrambling, you may want to consider using a walking stick instead of trekking poles. When I consider the number of times my walking stick was wedged between rocks or holding my weight the other day, I'm not sure that a trekking pole would have survived. A good walking stick can help with balance, reduce knee-strain, and take a lot of abuse.

There are two basic kinds of travel bargains. The first is what people normally think of, which is the special deals that show up from time to time on travel to popular destinations. If you are flexible and pay attention, you can often find a great package deal to Disney World, for example. If you have three trips in mind that you might enjoy (a cruise, a trip to Hawaii and a Vegas weekend, for example), you can wait for a special offer on one of them and increase your odds of a bargain vacation.

Then there are the other travel bargains. These are the "deals" that are always there, the affordable places to go and things to do that you can take advantage of without waiting for a special promotion. Here are a few examples.

Travel Bargains - Destinations

If you look at a map and use the internet to do a bit of research, there are probably many inexpensive places you can go within a couple hours of home. These are places where you can afford to stay and with activities that you like. For example, if you are traveling with kids and live near Michigan, you can go to the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes near Empire, Michigan, and then enjoy the beach at South Bar Lake.

An hour from there, you could visit the casino near Suttons Bay, and then drive Highway 22 and take in the views of Grand Traverse Bay. In Traverse City you can go to one of the water parks or hit the malls. In any case, hotels are very reasonable here, especially in the off-season.

If you live near Montana, you could visit Anaconda, a great little mountain town at the east end of the Anaconda-Pintler wilderness area. Hotels are under $100, (or just $140 for the week at the Harp and Thistle Inn) and there is a reasonably priced Jack Nicholas-designed golf course right in town. Nickel slot machines are in every casino here, and a movie at the beautiful Washoe Theater costs just $4.

Medicine Bow - Hiking To A Plane Crash

On October 6, 1955, United Airlines Flight 409 crashed near the top of Medicine Bow Peak, killing all 66 people on board (63 passengers and 3 crew) - the worst crash in U.S. history at the time. Once the bodies were recovered, explosives and napalm were used to destroy the remains of the plane. But according to Wikipedia, there are still parts of the plane scattered near the summit, which I looked for as I climbed to the top on August 13, 2007.

In southern Wyoming, near the border of Colorado, are the Medicine Bow Mountains. The Snowy Range makes up the heart of them. It can be accessed by taking Highway 130 west from Laramie, or east from I-80, near Walcott. After coming through from Laramie and camping one night, we loved the area so much that we returned a week later to camp at Sugarloaf Campground, the highest campground in the area (perhaps one of the highest in the country?)

It was surprisingly warm considering that the campground is at almost 11,000 feet, and there were still large patches of snow visible all over the surrounding peaks. When I woke up at 5:45 Monday morning to climb the peak, I was able to start out in a t-shirt. Though I had a sweater and a jacket with me, I never used either, even at the windy summit.

I started early, thinking it would take several hours to reach the top. The summit did look close, but then mountain tops always look closer than they really are, so I assumed it was many mile away. My map didn't have a scale, so I really didn't know how far it would be. After hiking down the road to Lewis Lake, I picked up the trail just as the sun was just starting to come up.

Fifty minutes after I left the van, I was standing on the summit. This was the fastest I have ever gone up a mountain, but not because I was rushing. It was only a little over two miles, and the trail was easy. I looked around and took my usual photo of my bare feet hanging out from the top.

I didn't find any of the plane debris, but what I did see was a total of 26 beautiful alpine lakes, all counted as I stood on one rock looking down. Rocky slopes, alpine meadows, lakes and dark green forests were laid out in every direction I looked. I noted where we would backpack and camp on our next visit, and what peaks I might climb.

After 15 minutes or so I headed down, meeting three other hikers along the trail, all of whom pointed out the fact that my wife and I missed the meteor shower the previous night. It was so early that one person assumed I had spent the night on the summit of Medicine Bow Peak to watch the shooting stars. Hmm... maybe next year I will.

I might also find the pieces of that plane crash that eluded me. But in any case, we'll be back here. The Snowy Range around Medicine Bow Peak is one of the most beautiful places we have camped.

We returned yesterday (August 13, 2007) from a ten-day road trip, and I can report that going slower saved us money, as it usually does. This isn't just about driving less, though when we started driving 200 miles in a day instead of 600 we certainly saved on gas. However, we also found that with time on our hands, we could do a better job shopping for a place to stay or to eat.

Make the big mile days the ones that pass through the boring stretches. Then when you come to an interesting place, find nice, affordable lodging and stick around a while. Once, while driving around the country camping in our van, we discovered hot springs in a wild part of Arizona, with picnic tables and bathrooms and desert hills to explore - everything we needed at the time. It cost just $3 per night, so it was easy to stay a while.

In fact, we stayed for eight days, enjoying the hot pools even during an unusual snowy day in the desert. We took daily hikes and hunted for antiquities and rocks in the surrounding hills, but more on that in a moment. Just once, we drove into the nearest town for groceries and water, so the entire eight days might have cost us $80 or so. That's cheap travel.

Five years back we stumbled into a great mountain town where we wanted to stay a while. We were in town early, instead of our usual driving until evening and scrambling to find a hotel, so we had time to check things out without rushing. We asked around and heard about a hotel above a pub. The rest of the hotel rooms in town were generally $60 per night and up, but we got a room above the pub for $120 - for an entire week. It had a stove and refrigerator, so we could cook our own meals if we wanted to save more.

More important than the fact that slowing down means cheap travel is the fact that when you go slower you discover things you would have missed. While at the hot springs mentioned above, for example, we we befriended a Mayan Indian who brought us to an old Pony Express station in the desert hills. It still had parts of the old walls remaining.

He showed us areas where we could find old arrowheads, and we found some. Out in the middle of the desert, he showed us perfectly round holes that had been drilled into the rocks hundreds of years earlier. They were used for water storage. In our van, we followed him to an area where ancient pottery littered the desert, and where gemstones could be found as well.

We wouldn't have found these things on our own. The experiences were also only possible because we didn't rush from one park to another, trying to fit as many "sights" into a trip as possible. It may not be a secret that a slow trip can be more interesting, but not many people seem to want to try this more relaxing, slower pace.

Where we stayed a week for $140 in that mountain town, we discovered area waterfalls and secret mountain lakes that only the locals knew about. The town was our base as we made trips into the surrounding area. Talking to people in local bars lead us to a well-preserved ghost town that wasn't on our map. Its streets were still full of buildings and foundations, but no tourists - one other car pulled in while we were there.
