Why A Down Sleeping Bag?

A down sleeping bag has its problems. They are usually more delicate than bags with synthetic fill, for example. They also lose almost all of their insulating ability when they are wet. Of course, you could just treat them gently. My own down bag is over ten years old now, and has no tears and no substantial loss of down. I have slept in some pretty rough conditions with it too. Pay attention to anything sharp or abrasive and even the most delicate bag can last for a decade or more.

I have also managed to keep my down sleeping bag dry during some nasty conditions. I once backpacked for seven days in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado when it was raining at some point during every day and every night. My bag never got wet, and I was sleeping under a tarp the whole time. So you can keep a bag dry if you try. That takes care of the negatives. Now for a look at the positives.

Down Sleeping Bags Are Still The Lightest

I don't really buy equipment that often now, so I had to look at what was out there to see if the above claim was still true. It is. The synthetics are getting closer and closer in terms of warmth for the weight of the fill, but they can't yet match down. It may not be a big difference, but for those like myself who like to backpack in the mountains with less than ten pounds in the pack, every ounce counts.

My own bag, by the way, weighs just 17 ounces. It is rated down to 40 degrees Fahrenheit, but I have used it comfortably below freezing many times. It is from Western Mountaineering.

Down Sleeping Bags - Other Advantages

Perhaps a bigger advantage than the weight savings (those synthetics are close, after all), is space savings. None of the synthetic-fill sleeping bags can pack down anywhere near as small as a down bag. Mine is the size of a loaf of bread when packed. This makes a difference when you have a small pack or a big trip. In fact, I take advantage of the space savings and do over-nighters with a day pack - something I couldn't do with a less compressible bag.

Finally, down sleeping bags last longer. The best synthetic fills seem to start losing loft after just a year or two, and they can't be reconditioned much. A down bag, on the other hand, can be fluffed up in the dryer and may have most of its loft even after ten years if stored properly (unstuffed).

There are certainly times and places for the synthetics. You might not want to backpack in the Olympic National Park's rain forest with down, for example. But if you have to choose just one bag for all-round use, and you like to go light, you should seriously consider a down sleeping bag.

The colorful Dutch colonial architecture is delightful to see. Here you can explore the island and see many wonderful sights such as the California Lighthouse by caravan. Oranjestad also has beautiful beaches and snorkeling is a great adventure.

The next stop that the ship docks at is off the Venezuelan coast at Willemstad, Curacao. Of the three "ABC" Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao), Curacao is the largest and most populated.In 1954 it separated from the Netherlands yet you will find that there is still a very strong Dutch influence in its architecture and its culture. You can explore the magnificent Hato Caves and underground lake here in Willemstad. What an awesome sight it was to see this underground world. There is also a trolley-train tour that is enjoyable.

The next stop will be on the northeastern coast of the Caribbean at Philipsburg, Saint Maarten. There are two sides to this island, the Dutch and French. On the Dutch side you can find beautiful jewelry, excellent beaches, and night festivities. The French side of the Caribbean is known for its nude beaches and clothing stores to shop in. Because of the many duty-free shops the island is known as a shopper's paradise. Jewelry, leather goods, tobacco, designer clothes are some of the things you find here.

Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands is the last stop for this fabualous cruise. Purchased by the United States, Saint Thomas has so much to offer. Here the shopping is excellent, the dining is magnificent, and the white sandy beaches are breathtaking. While you are in Saint Thomas you do not want to miss the spectacular view of Magens Bay from the very famous Drakes Seat.

So, we are officially in recession (like we hadn’t already noticed!and I haven't heard one definitive answer on when the economy will grow again.

It’s that time of year where I start to think about where I want to go on holiday, but I want to be a little bit more careful with my pennies this year. My money can't be spent to the same level abroad now and cheap flights aren't as available as they were before this credit mess. What if I book a flight and the company folds before my holiday or leaves me stranded on a tropical island (well, that wouldm't be so bad!)!).

I was chatting to a friend last night about my conundrum – explaining that I wanted a holiday full of FUN and laughter as I am fed up of hearing all about the credit crunch but at the same time I was living it so have to spend carefully. A holiday in Wales is what he suggested. Wales!! Really!? I thought the weather was crap there! And it’s full of sheep, leaks and daffodils and, and, and Wales holiday cottages and blokes named Dafydd!

Apparently, ‘it’s not unusual’, for people to stereotype Wales and the Welsh in this way - the weather is a little dodgy and there are blokes named Dafydd (but not all of them) but there is so much to do that the weather doesn’t spoil a thing. He kindly informed me that preparing for bad weather means that good weather is an added treat.

So, I decided to take a look for myself. I jumped onto my laptop, fired up the internet access and plunged into a world of Wales on the web. I love youtube.com. It's perfect for the lazy surfer.com – saves me reading stuff and I found the following video which is part of an advertising campaign for visitwales.co.uk suggesting things you can do in Wales.

Apparently you can go cycling, play at boats with kids, stay in a blue hotel (which looks like a toy – holiday cottages Wales stylie!) which is full of local stuff like the blankets, the art on the wall – even the beds. Rock climbing, and then throwing yourself off a cliff into water, drink welsh wine, eat crab and sausages (Welsh surf and turf – tee hee!), or Michelin star cuisine made with local produce. My god, the list is exhaustive.

So, yep – I’m sold – I’m going to give it a go, safely in the knowledge that I am helping our slowing economy by keeping British money in Britain.

After 6 months of getting lost in the woods, one camper was rescued by rescue workers and policemen and firemen after they found him half dead from starvation and dehydration. He went camping with his classmates half a year ago and he got lost from the gang. Fortunately, he survived. Have it not been for the wilderness survival skills he learned before they went out camping, he could have been found dead floating in a river or in the mouth of a hungry bear, in pieces.

It is just correct for anyone to teach himself how to survive in the wilderness. You can get lost among these mesmerizing sight of tall trees, the clear blue sky and the clear white water crystal. There are already many incidents of people getting lost in the woods, in the mountains and some of them were never found. It’s always highly recommended by proper authorities that if ever you want to go hiking or camping in them woods, you need to train yourself first some survival skills training or if not, you can hire somebody to be your guide who knows the place like it was the back of his hand.

But availing the services of someone who is an expert to be the guide can also be too costly, that is, if ever you can find somebody. Sometimes, other individuals can be too pre-occupied doing their own personal obligations and works that are eating their time and you can’t do something about. Undiscovered Travel Destinations

Not all travel destinations are packed full of tourists. In fact, not all of them are even on the map. I have had an interest in these "secret" places since I first discovered two little lakes high in the hills and cliffs north of Ishpeming, Michigan. No trails even lead to these, and there was a trout on the line ten seconds after the cast.

Other travel destinations are not so isolated, but they are still generally overlooked by most tourists. This was true of Yelapa, Mexico when I went there in 1981. The beaches were uncrowded, you could buy fresh fish for dinner from the fishermen in the afternoon, and a palapa (thatched-roof house) rented for about $100 per month. The surrounding jungle had waterfalls you could swim under. No roads lead there, but there was a daily boat from nearby Puerto Vallarta.

Yelapa, alas, has been discovered and overrun with tourists now. Often being one myself, I have nothing against tourists. But when the crowd gets too thick I prefer the more secret places. Here are some examples of a few of these travel destinations that are still undiscovered.

Storm Lake

Anaconda, Montana is a fun destination by itself. You can rent a room above the Harp and Thistle Pub for $140 for the week (as of August 2007) and be within walking distance of at least ten casinos with nickel slot machines, as well as a new brew pub and restaurant (Rocky Mountain Brewing). Two blocks away, the Washoe Theater, considered one of the most beautiful in the country by the Smithsonian Institute, charges just $4 for a movie, and 90 cents for a small popcorn. A Jack Nicholas-designed golf course (The Old Works Golf Course) is just at the edge of this small town.

If you really want to escape, though, drive 14 miles west on Highway 1. When you see the sign that says "Storm Lake," turn there. It's nine miles to the lake (stay left when the road splits), but you may need high clearance for the last mile (although we used to make it there in our Ford Escort). There will usually be a few locals at the lake, but you'll always find a place to park.

The lake sits at about 8,000 feet, and is known locally for its cutthroat trout. Hike the trail along the right side and on the other side you'll find the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness Area. Less than hour up the trail you'll reach Storm Lake Pass, at the tree line. From here you can continue into the tundra environment of Goat Meadows, or into a seemingly endless wilderness of mountains and lakes. You'll rarely have any company other than the bears and birds and mountain goats.

Alamogordo, New Mexico

This is not at the top of most tourists lists, which is good for those of us that like our travel destinations to be uncrowded. It is a great little town, however, and a great base from which to explore the surrounding area. It is also a nice place to escape the winter, since it rarely snows or gets too cold here.

You can check out the little zoo right in town for a relaxing afternoon. There is also an Imax Theater on the north side of town (watch for the signs), and you probably won't have any long lines to wait in. On Saturdays from June to October you can visit the Farmers market at the county fairgrounds.

If you want to get up above the desert, drive the thirty minutes or so up to Cloudcroft in the nearby mountains, or go a little further the observatory at Sunspot, or to the Casino in Ruidoso. If you time it right, you can bask in the sun one day in Alamogordo and be skiing the next day at the Cloudcroft Ski Area.

For an unusual destination, you can visit the Trinity Test Site, where the first nuclear bomb was exploded. It is about an hour north of Alomogordo, down possible confusing dirt roads, and it is only open a day or two each year, so you'll have to do your homework. To the west of town is the White Sands National Monument, with its truly amazing dunes of white sand.

Other Secret Travel Destinations

Here in our hometown of Canon City, Colorado there is an area (Red Canyon Park) just ten miles out of town that has fantastic red rock formations like those in the more famous Garden of the Gods park in Colorado Springs. The difference? You won't ever feel crowded in this park, and you can climb on the rocks all you want, and explore slot canyons as well. How do you find out about travel destinations like this? Scrambling - Hiking Safely In Rocky Terrain

After scrambling to the the summit of Mount Bushnell, I sat on a boulder that was cracked down the middle. Five seconds after my usual summit photo of my bare feet hanging over the edge, the left half of my rock fell loose. I watched as it bounced down the mountainside. I took out my crackers and continued to watch. The rock, and the others it had collected along the way, stopped about 500 feet below. I'm glad I chose the right side of the rock to sit on.

Later, scrambling down from the top, I slipped. I got a bruised leg from one rock, and a gash on one hand from another - the one that kept me from tumbling down the mountainside. The irony was that I rarely ever have a bad slip when hiking and climbing, and I had just stopped a moment earlier to take some notes on "safe scrambling" for this article. I guess the first safety lesson is to concentrate on the task at hand and take your notes later.

Scrambling, according to one dictionary, is "an ambiguous term - somewhere between hill-walking and rock climbing." It is a necessary part of hiking and backpacking in the mountains unless you are content to stick to the trails and always be looking up at the peaks. I'm not. I like to be looking down at everything from time to time. Since not all mountains have easy trails to the top, this sometimes means crossing long stretches of rock.

Of course, rock isn't a problem by itself. Sometimes it is solid and sloped gently, so you can hike across it easily. Other times, as on Mount Bushnell, it is loose, and mixed with almost vertical stretches which require your hands as much as your feet. Here are some tips for making this kind of scrambling a little bit safer.

Scrambling Tips

1. Beware of pulling rocks loose. You can use the rocks above you to steady yourself on steep parts, but try not to put much weight on them unless absolutely necessary. Remember that when they come loose, you are below them. More than one hiker has pulled a rock down upon himself with fatal results.

2. Big is better. When crossing loose rocks, try to step on the larger ones. They are less likely to move, and when they do move, they usually do so more slowly.

3. Stay away from each other. If there are two or more in your group, don't travel directly below each other on steep slopes. The rock that one person knocks loose will aim for the next in line. Keep some distance between you, and if ascending straight up, do so parallel to each other, ten feet or more apart.

4. Know your abilities. In particular, consider whether you'll be able to climb down the rocks you are scrambling up. Down is always more dangerous and usually more difficult.

5. Head for the grass. If you have a choice of routes, stick to those where the rocks are mixed with patches of grass. They are usually anchored more solidly here.

6. Learn to read the rocks. With experience you'll get a "feel" for which rocks are more likely to break loose, and which slopes are more easily climbed. Speed up this learning process by paying attention as you scramble, making rules as you go, like "these kind of boulders are slippery," and "that type of rock breaks easily."

7. Avoid wet rock. It's bad enough to have every second rock you step on move under your foot, but it's downright treacherous when they are slippery too. Wet usually equals slippery. Be aware of the surface of the rocks you are scrambling across, and whether it might rain before you get back down to the trail.

8. Use a walking stick If you'll be doing a lot of scrambling, you may want to consider using a walking stick instead of trekking poles. When I consider the number of times my walking stick was wedged between rocks or holding my weight the other day, I'm not sure that a trekking pole would have survived. A good walking stick can help with balance, reduce knee-strain, and take a lot of abuse.

There are two basic kinds of travel bargains. The first is what people normally think of, which is the special deals that show up from time to time on travel to popular destinations. If you are flexible and pay attention, you can often find a great package deal to Disney World, for example. If you have three trips in mind that you might enjoy (a cruise, a trip to Hawaii and a Vegas weekend, for example), you can wait for a special offer on one of them and increase your odds of a bargain vacation.

Then there are the other travel bargains. These are the "deals" that are always there, the affordable places to go and things to do that you can take advantage of without waiting for a special promotion. Here are a few examples.

Travel Bargains - Destinations

If you look at a map and use the internet to do a bit of research, there are probably many inexpensive places you can go within a couple hours of home. These are places where you can afford to stay and with activities that you like. For example, if you are traveling with kids and live near Michigan, you can go to the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes near Empire, Michigan, and then enjoy the beach at South Bar Lake.

An hour from there, you could visit the casino near Suttons Bay, and then drive Highway 22 and take in the views of Grand Traverse Bay. In Traverse City you can go to one of the water parks or hit the malls. In any case, hotels are very reasonable here, especially in the off-season.

Medicine Bow - Hiking To A Plane Crash

On October 6, 1955, United Airlines Flight 409 crashed near the top of Medicine Bow Peak, killing all 66 people on board (63 passengers and 3 crew) - the worst crash in U.S. history at the time. Once the bodies were recovered, explosives and napalm were used to destroy the remains of the plane. But according to Wikipedia, there are still parts of the plane scattered near the summit, which I looked for as I climbed to the top on August 13, 2007.

In southern Wyoming, near the border of Colorado, are the Medicine Bow Mountains. The Snowy Range makes up the heart of them. It can be accessed by taking Highway 130 west from Laramie, or east from I-80, near Walcott. After coming through from Laramie and camping one night, we loved the area so much that we returned a week later to camp at Sugarloaf Campground, the highest campground in the area (perhaps one of the highest in the country?)

It was surprisingly warm considering that the campground is at almost 11,000 feet, and there were still large patches of snow visible all over the surrounding peaks. When I woke up at 5:45 Monday morning to climb the peak, I was able to start out in a t-shirt. Though I had a sweater and a jacket with me, I never used either, even at the windy summit.

I started early, thinking it would take several hours to reach the top. The summit did look close, but then mountain tops always look closer than they really are, so I assumed it was many mile away. My map didn't have a scale, so I really didn't know how far it would be. After hiking down the road to Lewis Lake, I picked up the trail just as the sun was just starting to come up.

Fifty minutes after I left the van, I was standing on the summit. This was the fastest I have ever gone up a mountain, but not because I was rushing. It was only a little over two miles, and the trail was easy. I looked around and took my usual photo of my bare feet hanging out from the top.

I didn't find any of the plane debris, but what I did see was a total of 26 beautiful alpine lakes, all counted as I stood on one rock looking down. Rocky slopes, alpine meadows, lakes and dark green forests were laid out in every direction I looked. I noted where we would backpack and camp on our next visit, and what peaks I might climb.

After 15 minutes or so I headed down, meeting three other hikers along the trail, all of whom pointed out the fact that my wife and I missed the meteor shower the previous night. It was so early that one person assumed I had spent the night on the summit of Medicine Bow Peak to watch the shooting stars. Hmm... maybe next year I will.

I might also find the pieces of that plane crash that eluded me. But in any case, we'll be back here. The Snowy Range around Medicine Bow Peak is one of the most beautiful places we have camped.

We returned yesterday (August 13, 2007) from a ten-day road trip, and I can report that going slower saved us money, as it usually does. This isn't just about driving less, though when we started driving 200 miles in a day instead of 600 we certainly saved on gas. However, we also found that with time on our hands, we could do a better job shopping for a place to stay or to eat.

Make the big mile days the ones that pass through the boring stretches. Then when you come to an interesting place, find nice, affordable lodging and stick around a while. Once, while driving around the country camping in our van, we discovered hot springs in a wild part of Arizona, with picnic tables and bathrooms and desert hills to explore - everything we needed at the time. It cost just $3 per night, so it was easy to stay a while.

In fact, we stayed for eight days, enjoying the hot pools even during an unusual snowy day in the desert. We took daily hikes and hunted for antiquities and rocks in the surrounding hills, but more on that in a moment. Just once, we drove into the nearest town for groceries and water, so the entire eight days might have cost us $80 or so. That's cheap travel.

Five years back we stumbled into a great mountain town where we wanted to stay a while. We were in town early, instead of our usual driving until evening and scrambling to find a hotel, so we had time to check things out without rushing. We asked around and heard about a hotel above a pub. The rest of the hotel rooms in town were generally $60 per night and up, but we got a room above the pub for $120 - for an entire week. It had a stove and refrigerator, so we could cook our own meals if we wanted to save more.

Slowing Down Means Better Travel Experiences

More important than the fact that slowing down means cheap travel is the fact that when you go slower you discover things you would have missed. While at the hot springs mentioned above, for example, we we befriended a Mayan Indian who brought us to an old Pony Express station in the desert hills. It still had parts of the old walls remaining.

He showed us areas where we could find old arrowheads, and we found some. Out in the middle of the desert, he showed us perfectly round holes that had been drilled into the rocks hundreds of years earlier. They were used for water storage. In our van, we followed him to an area where ancient pottery littered the desert, and where gemstones could be found as well.

We wouldn't have found these things on our own. The experiences were also only possible because we didn't rush from one park to another, trying to fit as many "sights" into a trip as possible. It may not be a secret that a slow trip can be more interesting, but not many people seem to want to try this more relaxing, slower pace.

Where we stayed a week for $140 in that mountain town, we discovered area waterfalls and secret mountain lakes that only the locals knew about. The town was our base as we made trips into the surrounding area. Talking to people in local bars lead us to a well-preserved ghost town that wasn't on our map. Its streets were still full of buildings and foundations, but no tourists - one other car pulled in while we were there.

Making it almost matched with Taoyuan airport.

This airport is the busiest in Asia and was voted airport of the year in 2007 by UK company Skytrax. It has on-time departures of 81.1% and a on-time arrivals score of 79.3%, giving it a total rate of 79.7%

It looks like Tokyo airports take the crown for most punctual airports, seeing as they pinched the top 2 spots, but overall, it looks like if you want a delay free holiday, you will have to visit Asia.

We often go on vacation and only end up using half of what we bring, regretting we brought so much in the first place.

When I travel, all of my belongings fit into a tiny daypack and a larger backpack or duffel bag. I have traveled for over a year without ever needing anything more. In fact, I often found I brought too much!! I am shocked when I see how much people pack for a trip and how much they don't use. They ask me my secret to packing light. I’ll tell you what I tell them.

Here’s how to pack light and how you can too:

First, create of list of everything you think you might need. Everything and anything. From clothes, to toiletries, to electronics, to jackets, and everything in between. This packing list usually ends up pretty long. But that’s ok, we’ll get it down quickly.

Next, look at your list and think about it in relation to your destination. If you are going to the beach, do you really need pants or jeans? If you are going to Paris in the summer, do you really need to pack long sleeve shirts?

After that, you should have cut your packing list down by a bit by eliminating those items that don’t really have anything to do with your destination. Now, let’s take a look at your toiletry list. Why are you packing so much? In this cautious age, people tend to pack every medicine known to man. Let’s be realistic- do you ever use them? Can’t you buy them there? Go minimal. If you do get sick, you can always by Tylenol or diyarear medicine there. Take the bare essentials. A few pills that take up only a little space- you don’t need the whole box.

What about the non-medical supplies your packing? Soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, razor, and shaving cream is all you need. If you are in a hotel, they will give you shampoo and soap. You’re going on holiday, not to a corporate function so ditch the cosmetics and facial products.

Now, think about your packing list. You can buy items while you are away if you need too? Probably lots. Get rid of the bug spray, the suntan lotion, and whatever else you are packing. You aren't allowed to bring them on the airplane.

Ok, let’s step on the road to packing light. We’ve probably cut out half of your list now. The final step is to just cut out another half. You are holiday, relaxing. Stuff doesn’t get that dirty and you can wear the same shorts a few days in a row. Ditch the towel- just use the one from the hotel. Take half as many clothes. Wear clothes longer than normal! You never wear everything you take and unless you slip something or sweat through your shirt, you can wear it for more than one day.

That’s it. That is the secret to packing light. Cutting, cutting, and cutting until you get to the essential items you need to pack. If you follow my advice, I guarantee you will be packing light and make the whole packing process much easier.

UFO spotted over Stansted Airport in 1990

Old files have recently been released by the Ministry of Defense about possible UFO sightings, and one of them contains information regarding Stansted Airport.

Stansted Airport had seven people contact them on June 30th 1990 after they saw a strange oblong object floating in the sky at around 2.40am.

One person that did see the object was a man from the RAF and his uncle while they were fishing, why they were fishing at 2.40am is unknown to me, but he discribed the object as having "an oblong front, lit up with searchlights, flat around the back with two red lights to the rear", he also said that it had "no engine noise" even though he said that it could have been no more than 200 yards from him.

The man also said when questioned by police about the object that is was "just sitting there over the top of me, no noise. It sat about 10 minutes, the lights went out and then it disappeared.", also, "It didn't shoot off - it just disappeared".

This member of the RAF was one of the seven who called Stansted Airport that night, and when he called to see if there had been any strange aircraft activity, he was told that 6 people had already called that night about the same incident.

When you were young growing up did you want to play cowboys? Maybe you wanted to be the bad guy instead of the hero wearing the white hat. One of the places you certainly dreamed a little about was the Southwestern Arizona Yuma Prison. Where the "really bad guys" were sent to serve out their time in prison. Not only were they prisoners but they were also forced to construct their own prison blocks!

The detention facility opened to business on July 1, 1875 with seven prisoners. Those 7 had been the ones building the prison. Now, the prison wasn't picky about who was there, because there were also 29 female prisoners that were detained at the prison. TB was a problem for the prisoners, one-hundred-eleven died throughout their time in Yuma Territorial Prison. Not somewhere that was healthy to stay under any circumstance. The prison certainly wasn't perfect. During its history twenty-six prisoners escaped. Of the three-thousand that were imprisoned over the years that is a very low number but absolutely not one that looked sharp on reports or to the neighboring cities. If they attempted to escape and did not succeed they got a painful ball and chain to keep them from trying again. Not a particularly comfortable way to try to walk around.

So, while you are checking out Arizona vacations offerings, think about when you dreamed that you wanted to be the bad cowboy - I'm sure you did not know all that stuff. The territorial prison was operated until 1907 (for a whole 31 years) before it became too small, overcrowded and eventually turned over for other uses. It has a continued life as a school; low cost housing for hobos and families left homeless during the Great Depression. Although it wasn't someplace you would long to live at, it was absolutely better than having no place to use for shelter. A few of the local Yuma residents decided that it was a low cost source for building supplies and so over the years many of the buildings were totally torn down and now are not part of the historical park today.

Today the Yuma Territorial State Historical Park is used to host a variety of special events during the year including the Gathering of the Gunfighters in January which you should think about visiting. It could be a lot of fun. If you are there at another time of year you may desire to experience one of the Haunted Tours during October. There are also Old West re-enactments performed each Sunday from October through April.

Why solo backpacking? To be honest, one of the reasons I sometimes go alone is simply that it's tough to find people to go with, especially on short-notice. So reason number one is just the sheer necessity. But that is not the only reason to enter the wilderness by yourself.

Another reason to backpack alone is related to the first: simplicity. For example, if you like to go light, you may have conflicts with friends who want to share the weight of heavy cooking gear and tents. You may prefer cheaper trips, rather than joining others on a flight to some distant locale that isn't any more beautiful than the trails within hours of you. In other words, you might not want to trade three affordable adventures for one expensive one.

Going solo gives you freedom as well. Even the best hiking partners will not need breaks at the same time, get hungry at the same time, want to hike the same distance each day or do the exact same things. When you're alone in the wilderness, there is a natural rhythm that can never be there when several people's needs have to be taken into account, and you are free to follow that rhythm.

On a solo backpacking trip in the Sierra Nevadas, I ate my fill of wild currants at 13,000 feet. As I walked by small lakes the trout scattered. Sunshine warmed me as I took naps on soft grass, and moonlight lit my way during night hikes. It is true that a misstep here or there could lead to death, that lightning could strike me down, or rain could soak me and make me hypothermic. But because of this I pay attention when I am alone out there.

Alone, you become very aware of your surroundings, of the clouds forming in the sky, of any little pain in your foot or back. It is an awareness without worry. This in-the-moment experience is worth having.

Solo Backpacking - Some Tips

Fortunately it has become much safer to get out there alone. This is because of technologies that can turn what would have been a disaster in the past into an inconvenience. Lose your maps? Just turn on the GPS unit on and find the landmark setting for your car to get out. Break your ankle? Turn on the emergency locator beacon or get out your cell phone.

To make it safe without giving up the experience of solitude, then, start by leaving the cell phone charged but off. Don't allow calls to you and don't call a soul unless you have a serious problem. As mentioned, a locator beacon is another safety option, but don't let such safety devices lure you into a false sense of security that gets you into trouble. Leave your basic itinerary with a trusted friend or family member, so they'll know when to call for a search if you don't return.

If you have a GPS unit, be sure to "mark" the car or trailhead before hiking in isolated areas - especially in difficult terrain. I recently was in an area where it took three hours (no trails) to travel a bit over a half-mile to the car. Without the GPS it would have been easy to get lost.

Finally, learn some skills to make solo backpacking safer. Being able to make a fire in any conditions is a good place to start. Knowing how to construct a few different kinds of emergency shelters is a good idea too. Also, while food is not usually the first concern in a wilderness emergency, it can't hurt to be familiar with a few wild edibles. And learn how to treat the most common injuries and illnesses you might encounter out there.

Look for used gear. Though I would never buy used shoes, I've found that thrift stores have plenty of used jackets that are in great condition. I've even found decent lightweight hiking pants at times, as well as aluminum pans that are really light and some other backpacking equipment.

Make your own gear. I know of backpackers who sew their own backpacks and sleeping bags. That seems like too much work to me, and I'm not sure the savings would amount to much. But I have modified cheap pans for backpacking, made hats from old thermal shirt sleeves, and bivy sacks from plastic and duct tape. And now that I think about it, I did make a backpack once from an old aluminum frame and a duffel bag. It weighed less than any commercial frame pack for sale at the time.

Skip the expensive foods. You don't need freeze-dried meals to enjoy backpacking. Snacks are a good way to go, and if you really need those cooked meals, bring simple foods like instant rice.

Plan your own backpacking excursions. Although guided hiking trips can be nice, they are expensive. Just plan your own. Choose a location, do your research online, and start looking for the cheapest plane tickets that will get you there.

Go to free places. Many people automatically think of national parks or other places that have fees when they think of a wilderness experience. But there are many places that are just as beautiful and don't charge anything. Try national forests with hiking trails, for example, or BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land, or state forests. One advantage of this approach - apart from the money savings - is that you'll likely find such area less crowded.

Find a location nearby. For many backpacking trips the cost of getting to the trailhead is the biggest expense. Isn't there someplace interesting to see within an hour or two of where you are? Visit those areas and you might save a lot of travel money.

A Turkish man, Hamdi Yazici, aged 41, was sentenced to 4 months in prison after he walked to the front of a plane with a bag, chanting 'Allah'.

The Turkish Airlines Airbus 321 was flying to Stansted Airport from Istanbul in October 2008 when the man, who was drunk at the time, frightened passengers by chanting 'Allah' while walking to the front of the plane. In court, the judge was informed that it took 6 members of the cabin crew to restrain the man until the police arrived when the plane had landed.

The court judge, Laura Harris said: “I am quite sure it was extremely distressing and alarming for those passengers.

“They didn’t know what you were planning to do when you started to walk down to the front – for all they knew you could have been a very dangerous man.”

The man admitted that he was drunk on the plane and he has now been sentenced to 4 months in prison.

Parking your car at an airport is different to popping to your local shops, you never know how busy the car parks will be or how close to the airport you can park. If you are not a regular visitor to the airport it may take you time to find an airport. I nearly had the problem of missing a flight at Stansted Airport once simply because I had not pre-booked my airport parking.

In fact a member of staff of the Stansted transport team was issued a warning for picking me up as a passenger. Why, why, why was this the case? Well I am wheelchair bound and was told that special transport was 25 minutes away; the coach driver who was performing pick-ups from the car park allowed me on to his vehicle.

When reaching the terminal one of his superiors saw me disembarking from the bus and issued the driver a warning. How did I find out? The driver of the special assistance vehicle told me the driver in question had been reprimanded by his airport officials.

How ridiculous that an airport worker was disciplined for helping a person in a wheelchair. That was a lesson learnt, and to be fair an expensive lesson, as the car parking for two days was not cheap I can tell you.

Backpacking In High Mountains

The high mountains of Colorado still had a lot of snow in mid June. In fact, the Arkansas river was close to flooding here in Canon City, despite there being no rain in weeks. The snow melt was enough to raise it to its highest level in years. But my friend Mike and I were still hoping to go backpacking up high.

We had been up to 9,000 feet a couple weeks earlier and saw just one snowbank in the woods. Driving home we could see that though there was a lot of snow in the high peaks of the northern Sangre De Christo mountains, it was in patches. There were large areas without snow, even above 13,000 feet. It was time to give it a try.

We decided on a two night trip to Bushnell Lakes and possibly to the top of Bushnell Peak (13,105 feet). About this time I received a phone call. I own a backpacking website, so I get emails with questions all the time, but this was only the second time someone had called me at home. The man on the other end was calling from Texas, wondering about the conditions in the Sangre De Christos - was there too much snow?

"I hope not," I told him. "Me and a friend are headed up there tomorrow." He said he had called the forest service rangers for an area south of where we would be, and they had told him everything was still snowed in up high. He was going for a week, starting a few days after us, and wondered if they might be exaggerating. We agreed that they probably were.

Challenges Of High Mountains

It was hot when we started, even with only 13 pounds on my back (I like to go light). Where the trail split we decided to go to the Stout Lakes instead, by the Twin Sisters Peaks. This was the next valley over from Bushnell Lakes, and a shorter hike. When we came to a trail register we noted that only a couple people had been up there this year. One had left an entry on the way down: "Lost the trail in the snow at 10,800 feet." It was dated just a few days earlier.

We headed up the trail, soon hearing the roaring stream it follows. We saw the first small patches of snow before we crossed it at about 9,600 feet. Then we were hiking on a trail that doubled as a stream itself, complete with small waterfalls. The snow patches were more frequent, and we walked over the stream/path on a snow bridge at one point before realizing that it was a three-foot fall if it had broken.

Several hours up the trail there was no trail. It was somewhere under several feet of snow. It is hard to get too lost following a stream up a valley, though, so we kicked steps into the hard snow and continued on. In places we found the trail again, and even had long dry stretches to hike. The melting process is very irregular. In one of our photos Mike is standing on dry grass next to a seven-foot high wall of snow. In another, I'm trying to climb a twenty-foot snow-cliff.

Then there is the photo from the first lake. It is of myself, standing on it. There was dry ground around half of it, but it was frozen. We headed back down to a small pond that was only partially covered in ice. It had been a hot day of backpacking in deep snow. We put our water bottles in a snowbank and set up the tarp on the grass. Marmots came near to investigate.

The next day we hiked up past the first and second lakes, both above tree line. We followed a stream up a steep hill and into a meadow full of wildflowers at about 12,000 feet. There were frozen lakes below, flowers around us, and a 13,012-foot mountain waiting above, past rocky climbs and slippery fields of snow. We made it to the top - the highest Mike had ever climbed - and signed the register. We could see mountains in all directions, some of them over 60 miles away.

By the time we made it back to the camp, I was sick. I hadn't anticipated the effect of the sun. I had a hat and sunglasses, but the sunlight reflects at you from all sides when you cross snow and ice. It wasn't just a sunburn, but sun-sickness. I spent the night alternating between feeling on fire and having chills run through my body. Mike got the chills the following day. With that in mind, here are some tips for backpacking in the high mountains.

1. Call the forest service. Find out what the conditions are where you plan to hike, so you can bring the proper equipment and clothing.

2. Have a good map and know how to use it. This is especially important in early summer, when you might lose the trail in the snow.

3. Sun block is just a start. Where a hat, sunglasses and long sleeves.

4. GPS your car location. If you have a GPS device, mark your car in case you lose the trail.

5. Check the trailhead register. Those backpacking before you may have stopped on the way out to note that a bridge is washed out, fallen trees have covered the trail, or something else you should know.

6. Climb high early. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in many high mountain ranges. If you want to go to the summits and high ridges, it's best to do it early and be lower before noon.

It's great to have meadows and valleys to yourself. That's one of the advantages of backpacking in the high mountains early in the season. Just be ready for a wide variety of hiking conditions.

Four Uncommon Outdoor Adventures

When you are ready for outdoor adventures, but want to try something new, you have to think in new ways. Forget the mountain bike or the paid rafting tour. Here are some low budget interesting things you may not have tried.

Mine Hunting

A friend and I have been to Phantom Canyon six times this spring, hiking in the hills and exploring narrow gulches. Five of those times we have found an abandoned mine or two. Most were less than forty feet deep, and a classic hole in the wall. One was discovered by following a trail of beautiful quartz boulders uphill for twenty minutes, until we found where the rocks had been blown apart many years ago. There is a wall of pure quartz there, perhaps fifteen feet high and twenty wide. I have never seen anything like it.

Some of these are old claims on public lands. We just like to poke around, but in recent years treasure hunters have been taking metal detectors to these old mines to work over the tailings piles. Occasional gold nuggets are found inside the rocks there. To make this outdoor adventure more profitable and adventurous, you need to find the mines that are five miles or more from any road, like those in the San Juan mountains of southwestern Colorado.

How do you find them? We started by going online and searching "mines." We obtained a list of 160 mines in Fremont County, Colorado alone. But only one of the five we recently found was on the list. Just hiking in mining country and keeping your eyes open works too. You can also find old mines noted on many topographical maps.

Searching For Swimming Holes

Ask around and you might get directions to hidden swimming holes. We found a beautiful one a mile down a small creek in this way. We also met fifteen other people there, jumping from the cliffs into a small pool.

If you want to find less populated ones, you need to get a topographical map and start searching. Look for narrow canyons with year-round streams (hard hiking and climbing assures you that there won't be a crowd). Then you need to get out there and start exploring. I was out the other day swimming in a nice pool below a nine-foot waterfall, and in the six times I have been in that canyon, I have never seen another person.

Huckleberry Finn Adventures

Have you ever thought about building a raft and floating down a river like Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer? This works best in wide rivers that have long stretches without rapids. We used to do it on the Manistee River in Michigan.

Our rafting adventures usually started with parking the car downstream from a long wild stretch and walking up the river for a hour or so, taking a shortcut that cut past the big loops and bends. We carried snacks and water, a saw and hatchet, and scraps of rope. By afternoon we had built a raft of dead trees and began the float back to the car. That's usually when the real fun started. Here's a tip: have long poles for controlling the 1,500-pound pile of logs and humans you'll be guiding around and under trees.

Fishing For Smelt By Hand

In Northern Michigan and Wisconsin the smelt run up many streams in the early spring. People love these fish because they are easily cleaned and when deep fried do not need to be scaled. One night I saw the back of a pickup truck filled with the smelt from one small creek. They are caught simply by dipping a net in and scooping them out.

It's nice to get outdoors at night (when the smelt run), but for a bit more fun, try catching them by hand. Just lay on the creek bank and hold the flashlight over the water. When a smelt swims by, quickly pin it to the bottom and grab it. I have caught 40 in a hour using this technique. They made a decent meal for several of us. This last one isn't the most exciting of these outdoor adventures, but it is satisfying to catch dinner with your own hands.

Backpacking At Ten Below Zero

We were both thirteen years old and backpacking in Michigan without adults (times were different back then). Camping miles from the nearest road, in a single-wall pup tent, we tried not to move too much, because doing so resulted in a shower of icy crystals raining down on us - the frozen condensation from our own breath. When we got up that morning, the thermometer read ten or eleven degrees below zero.

We got out of the tent and everything was glittering with those same crystals, which only seem to form on the coldest days. Jim suggested that we should take off our coats, sweaters and shirts and shake them out. They get flattened by sleeping in them, and this would fluff them up, making them warmer. That was his theory. Soon we were standing there in the snow at ten below with our bare skin turning red.

Fortunately, we were able to dress again before losing the feeling in our fingers. Fluffing up the clothing did help it to trap more air and insulate better, so we warmed up quickly. Probably this would have been a better idea after we had the fire going, but it worked. Add it to your list of ways to stay warm when backpacking, but you might want to do it before you leave your tent (provided it is dry in there). What else can you do to stay warm?

Staying Warm While Backpacking - Six More Ways

1. Stay dry.

Always keep as dry as possible when there is a chance of getting cold. It is always surprising to me how often I see hikers walking right through streams without rolling up their jeans. Given how slowly jeans dry, this usually means being wet when the sun sets. Roll up those pants! Put on your rain pants when walking through dew-covered tall grass and bushes. Dry your wet socks by hanging them on your pack.

2. Have the right clothing.

The jeans mentioned above shouldn't be part of most backpacking trips. Jeans are too difficult to dry. Good hiking pants made of some type of brushed nylon (nylon that feels soft and comfortable), dry fast. I have seen my pants dry in less than thirty minutes after a good soaking. If the weather calls for long underwear, use polypropylene or some similar material that will stay warm when wet and dry easily. The same goes for other clothing. Avoid cotton.

3. Dress in layers.

Layers of clothing trap more insulating air and keep you warmer. Having more layers rather than one thick coat also means you can more easily adjust for differing conditions. That is important to keep you from sweating. If you sweat too much, the wetness can cause you to get chilled when you stop exerting yourself. Dress in layers, then, and remove them as you warm up.

4. Eat and drink properly.

Hot liquids will warm you up - no surprise there. But many people do not realize that foods are not all equal in their ability to produce heat in our bodies. Fats actually produce heat as they are digested, which is part of the reason that whale blubber is eaten in arctic areas. Army survival courses teach soldiers to eat large chunks of butter to stay warn in winter conditions. For backpacking purposes, you can have olive oil on your pasta or eat oily foods like corn chips to get the same warming effect.

5. Learn how to make and place shelters.

A simple shelter of sticks covered with piles of dry leaves and grass can insulated you and save your life if you are caught out in the winter without a tent. Learning how to make a few of these simple shelters is smart planning for possible emergencies. But even if you have a tent with you, it matters where you set it up. It is normally colder the higher you go, but cold air also collects in the bottoms of valleys at night and into the morning. A level area somewhere in between is best. Try to find a place out of the wind as well.

6. Learn a few tricks for staying warm.

Apart from the basic principles of staying warm during winter backpacking, there are a lot of little tricks you can learn and use. Fully fluffing up a sleeping bag, for example, makes it more effective. Doing sit-ups in your bag before going to sleep gets you a warm start to the night. Some water bottles or canteens can be filled with hot water and kept in the bag with you (some bottles will distort if filled with boiling water). Keeping water bottles inside your clothing during strenuous hiking keeps them warmer, so later you won't have to drink cold water, which can suck away some of your heat in the evening.

By far, one of the healthiest and most calorie-packed foods you can take with you are nuts and seeds. You'll likely burn a little more than that each day on the average hiking trip, but losing a pound or two is no disaster for most people.

Skip The Backpacking Stove

Another way to save weight with your backpacking food is to bring only meals which don't have to be cooked. This will be a problem for those that can't get comfortable without a hot dinner, but some of us enjoy the break from cooking and washing pots. There is no reason you can't have a healthy diet without cooking, and most backpacking is done in the warmer months, so why not try a no-cooking trip?

You will save the weight of the stove, as well as the fuel. There is a compromise that gets you one hot meal, without carrying the equipment. Just put a few frozen hotdogs in a sealed plastic bag and wrap them in the clothing in your pack to insulate them. In this way it should take them a full day to thaw out, so on day two you can cook them over a fire.

If you know the seasons of the various plant foods where you'll be going, you can essentially replace some pack weight with your knowledge. Even if you don't want to plan on eating wild edibles, knowing them well means you can more safely carry the minimum amount of backpacking food you think you'll need.
